Horses new to the track are often described as being "green" and seem a little confused while charging from the gate.

Now I am not really confused, but I definitely had to charge from the gate to gain a stance in this fast paced Thoroughbred industry.

So let loose on my reins, because I am going full speed ahead in my experiences, thoughts, and observations through horse breeding and racing. Maybe a little flare on the side, who knows.

re: Dubai World Cup 2014 Thoughts

What works in Ireland and GB will not necessarily work in the US. There, horses TYPICALLY have only one prep for the Guineas if any. And all horses are on the same timeline, since turf racing doesn't start until the end of March, having stopped in early November. Not some horses racing since January (who may have had little time off from the 2yo year) and some starting later after several months on the farm.

The only horse I think can beat him if he is right is Social Inclusion, assuming he gets a good post position.

Those who have been questioning Social Inclusion’s foundation must not have heard of the Classic winner Ballymore.

Ballymore was a son of the Ribot horse, Ragusa.

Ballymore, like Social Inclusion, did not run as a 2yo.

During his brief career, one horse he defeated was Epsom Derby winner Roberto, the sole conqueror of the all-time great Brigadier Gerrard.

In his first start, lifetime, Ballymore ran in the Irish 2000 guineas. He won.

Not only did he win, he was well-supported in the betting because he was trained by a master, Paddy Prendergast.

This goes to show that if the horse has the talent, the trainer can use any means he wants to get him to perform at his best.

Social Inclusion cannot exceed his performances to date, nor does he need to, to beat these horses.

As much as I love Thoroughbred horses, racing, and the beauty of the sport; the way the unwanted, injured, or worn out Thoroughbreds are discarded keeps me away for months, and sometimes years at a time. Until the slaughter pipe-line is shut down racing will have a black eye, that no amount of p.r. can cover.

To read of the few horses that are retired with the respect and dignity that all living beings deserve is bittersweet. For every Arson Squad, and I'm Charismatic the number of Thoroughbreds that don't have a happy ending is unimaginable.

The dangers of racing are enough. The animals that face that danger in every race for our entertainment need to receive the best of care.

Livestock-shmivestock

For the record, I am a meat-eating, liberal who would probably not have taken a chance on that surgery for Arson Squad. I'm o.k. with humane euthanasia for people and animals. To see what horses go through on the way to slaughter is unimaginable. Sorry to rain on the parade. I should have kept my comments to myself. Seems to me mom always said if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all...

I am the lucky owner of four OTTBs...none were very good (in fact one never even placed in any of the races he was in) but it is an honor to care for these backbones of the industry. OF is a wonderful organization, and I urge everyone to donate to them or New Vocations. And kudos to the owners who cared enough about Arson Squad and others who get the care they need to retire to a happy life...these owners are real heroes!
