I should have read the comments before I posted rather than after !! Yikes. Probably a smart move though to point to The Travers instead. More should do that. Seems a little premature to decide that now but they obviously did not like how he came out of the race and think he needs a lot more seasoning at a reasonable pace.

I feel certain that he did not like the slop. I don't recall the behavior he was exhibiting pre-race but my notes said that he doesn't seem to like the surface. I thought he ran well considering that he tolerated the surface rather than liking it. He should do much better on a fast surface but if he gets into The Derby and the track is sloppy I don't think he'll do well. I like his pedigree, and in watching his replays prior to his last race I found him to be visually impressive. He's a runner. He worked on 2-4 so that is encouraging. Very interested in seeing where they will run him next. Personally I think he can jump up to a G3 stakes on a dry track but another allowance and then into a 3yo prep is fine too.

The last stop was Barn 26, where Angel Penna Jr. was working on payroll. Penna trains the talented Cool Blue Red Hot who, coincidentally, finished second To Soldat in that Jan. 21 allowance race. It turned out to be a bit of a sore subject.

“He’s a May foal and I didn’t want his first race back to be too hard on him. I told the rider you’re going to be laying second or third. Whatever you do, wait until after the three-eighths pole to make your move. If he gets there, he gets there; there’s always the next race.

Don’t you know he starts chasing [Soldat] at the half-mile pole, even earlier than I wanted?! He wasn’t ready for that and it took him four days to get his normal appetite back. He’s fine now, but he’s off the Derby trail. He’ll be at his very best around Travers time.”

:-( sorry

I like the horse too, and I agree with you--maybe it was the slop that made him not want to kick on in the stretch? Hopefully for him it's unlikely that he'll see the same type of pace/surface scenario in future prep races.

The TrueNicks "D" rating means the cross that has a low strike rate at getting stakes winners. The cross of Storm Cat line stallions over A.P. Indy line mares has 213 starters, but just 8 stakes winners. The only graded winners on the cross (Bluegrass Cat, Mr. Sidney, and Untouched Talent) are direct Storm Cat/A.P. Indy, so it looks like the sons of each have not had the same affinity.
