I ran into trainer Jack Van Berg yesterday morning at the Hollywood Park track kitchen. He just got back from Kentucky, where he went to see Alysheba. I asked him how the old guy looked, and he said, "Good. A bit sway backed, but pretty good!"

My wife, daughter and I visited the Kentucky Horse Park October 4th because I was under the impression that Lava Man would be there. I was told that he was living at Old Friends because the Horse Park had no available space for him in the Hall of Champions. So after chatting with Cigar and his roomies, we went over to Old Friends and learned that Lava Man was still in California where his massive fan base was gathering to give him a well deserved good-bye party. But now I read in Blood-Horse that Hall of Famer Alysheba is moving into John Henry's old stall on Halloween. But if there was no room for Lava Man, how is there room for Alydar's fabulous son? Not complaining, in fact we'll probably be visiting both places as soon as possible.

I have always loved Alysheba. He won the Ky Derby when I was a sophomore in high school. On my bulletin board were Alysheba's winner's circle photo, & newspaper clippings of Stefan Edberg (tennis player) & Jim Harbaugh (UofM quarterback). I recently stumbled across a photo I had taken of the bulletin board, obviously trying to finish out a roll of film in the years before digital cameras, and laughed because Alysheba was the only one of the three I still cared about. I never thought he would make it back to the U.S. I'm overjoyed! I can't wait to visit him at the Kentucky Horse Park.
