Rachel...I believe the difference between the term distaff (anything female)and lady is simply a matter of class. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are classy mares, so I'll keep calling them ladies. And Einstein is a true gentleman.

Adam...I did call out NOLA.com but things have appeared to be lost in the shuffle of the mayoral race and the Super Bowl dreams of the Saints. ( Geaux Saints!) I believe it was up to the Fair Grounds to make the most of the PR, and push for a headline. They didn't.

Rachel: Gentleman is a good one, I think I will use that sometime to refer to a group of males. =)

Slew: I think it is okay to call out news papers who are local, yet don't cover important local news online or in print. Especially online, where it only needs to be a blip.

It is great that NBC and USA are offering the Derby preps for the average viewers. Hopefully horse racing will once again gain a national audience. Speaking of opportunity....(I'm sorry...I have mentioned this before, but I'm so irked, I have to let people know) New Orleans has the Fair Grounds race track, and is having a tough time making a profit. Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra is stabled there, but that coup was mostly ignored by the New Orleans press. For the first time this week, a column notes "Steve Asmussen is overwhelmed by his success", and goes on to vaguely mention the Eclipse awards. You would think that the Fair Grounds would jump on this opportunity, but they didn't. The only time mass transit goes to the Fair Grounds is for Jazz Fest. Can't they arrange transit for the season?? (It's in the middle of the city). So opportunity came knocking at the Fair Grounds, but either their hearing aid was turned off...or they just didn't care. How sad for the sport...that it's not being promoted to its best advantage.

You mean these two are fillies, mares, girls or females...Linda Rice, Carla Gaines, Helen Pitts-Blasi, Mother Theresa and my Mom are Ladies...our beloved distaff are HORSES.

I wish you men would do one of two things:

Either refer to the colts as men, or better still, stop using "lady" as a term for a female horse.

It would be nice to see the handicap races on these NBC telecasts as well, especially when you consider how many of last year's stars will be back this year.

I can do without the food, fashion and celebrity stuff though. Guess I'll just ignore that part.
