About 30 minutes before it started, I noticed I had 100 WPS on the horse. I'm a small time better, so I got scared and cancelled ALL my tickets. The horse BARBARO of course trounced the Derby field. It was the first time I had ever picked the Derby winner.

Love her connections and the story behind her name, yet still didn't bet her:/ Would have, should have, could have, right?

It was my very first year to be able to bet and was super excited!

Looking over the field (at this time I loved Bandini and Afleet Alex, but didn't know much on the others in the field)... I did however like the #10 horse in that race. Not for his race record, as he went into the race a maiden winner. I liked that he was sired by the great Holy Bull and he himself was grey. He was 50-1 odds. I was full heartedly going to bet the $20 that I had to be a win, place show ($5 wps) and save $5 to put on Bandini to win.

However, I listened to my dad. Who doesn't follow the sport and asked why I would bet a 50-1 horse who might have three legs. So I went and put it all on Bandini.

Well, Bandini would finish 19th I believe and I watched in horror as the stretch run resulted in the #10 flying by all of them to get to the wire first.

The payoff from that would have been pretty good (back then i didn't understand a lot on the payoffs and still don't at the best of times)

Since then, I have only ever bet on two other Derby winners; Street Sense and Barbaro. Yet, the one that got away was the grey Giacomo. Got to meet Giacomo in 2010 at Adena Springs and had to get my picture with him giving him a mint to show my dad the 50-1 that I let him talk me out of. Needless to say that he doesn't say anything to me anymore about betting and he actually has on occasion given me a $10 to go and earn him some.

This year, I wish I had placed money on Believe You Can as she is the five Oaks winners that I have rooted for that came in. Before her, called Proud Spell, Rags to Riches, Blind Luck, and Rachel Alexandra.
