A wonderful heart warming story. How many other horses we bet on also have good stories? I believe I once saw her name on a racing form at a racetrack where we were running. To have foreknowledge of this story would have probably prompted a bet from me, and way more than casual interest. All the involved workers from the stall muckers, hot-walkers to the owners and friends especially enjoy cashing the winning ticket for one of theirs. I wonder how much more interesting and exciting the races would be if we knew something about the heroes. And how much loving care we would give them.

God bless you, God bless you, God bless you. Your mare has been blessed too. It's wonderful to hear about people who truely love horses, and your bond with this filly was remarkable. You sensed that she enjoyed your company and did not want you to leave. I've experienced a similar kinship with my baby, my brothers even remarking that she stood in my way while I was leaving the paddock so that I could not exit. I hope God continues to reward you both.

I enjoyed reading this remarkable story. I am very glad that Fifty is in her forever home with Mary.

I agree with Nina though. Don't breed Fifty unless you plan on forever keeping the resulting foal. There are far, far too many mares being bred all over the world. There are not enough good homes for all the horses. Many are abused, neglected, or forced to perform while hurt or sick. Tragically, many go to slaughter. Enjoy Fifty. Don't add to the horse overpopulation problem.

I'm just sorry she had to go through all she did before coming home to be with you. I admire your dedication and persistence. It's how horses like Miss Fifty have happy endings. I have a Beulah Park filly I feel that way about. Hopefully, her story will also have a happy ending.

Shonda, the Mosses did not rescue this filly because she never required rescuing.

Miss Fifty was fortunate in that she had Mary Cage looking out for her every step of the way, making sure that every owner and trainer who handled her knew that this filly had a passionate advocate watching and a forever home waiting.

Every thoroughbred - no, every horse - should be as lucky as this beautiful filly!

@Shonda, it doesn't seem to me that Miss Fifty ever needed "rescuing." She had good owners, and she was promised to Mary. Why should the Mosses butt in on such a situation?

To Mary: Please keep us updated about Miss Fifty from now on. I enjoyed reading her story so far very much.

Shonda, she didn't need rescueing.

She was in no danger of being put down. Many years ago I was given a horse off the harness track, a pacer, who was turning 15 years old. I had him for 10 years and together we had wonderful experiences. I hope many others will have this same experience.

Thanks for writing this wonderful story, Mary, about devotion and persistence. And I'm a big fan of the Mosses but do wonder about the same thing Shonda remarks on above. Maybe you could send the Mosses a copy of your article and that could focus their attention on the not always pretty aftermath for the horses they've sold.

What a wonderful story. I love reading these articles about OTTB's going to loving homes. Back in the 70's and 80's I bought a number of OTTB's, some in dire straits, got them back in shape and found them new homes. At that time there was still a horse slaughter house here, and many of them ended up there.
