Thanks for the story. I am old enough to remember most horses in the show ring and the hunt field were OTTB...people spent money on learning how to ride well. The horses (field hunters, and show horses) were also properly maintained and conditioned.

Thanks for some good news for a change! And high-hooves to Carrie Brogden for being a wonderful example of a caring and responsible breeder/owner. I totally agree with her approach of leading by example rather than getting on a soap box. Change oftentimes takes longer than we would like. Thanks for shining a light on one of the "good guys"!

Great story Esther!!! Carrie is a wonderful person to care so much about her horses.....wish there were more like her. Prime Cut is gorgeous and I wish him the best!! I'm following a horse right now that I plan to keep tabs on until he retires. He's a son of Point Given and I fell in LOVE at first sight. His name is Napa Valley from Brazil. He's raced 3 times out of the money and was recently gelded. I hope I can find a way to afford him when his time is up. I'll let you know.

MZ, I totally agree with you! Some tracks do have programs where small percentages are donated, but I think they are all volunatary at this point.

Good, Esther but now we need something similar at the tracks and to make it mandatory. Even for $3k claimers, the "retirement fee" at 0.5% would only be $15. I know it costs to feed and train and shoe and vet and everything else but we're not talking about machines and (as I've learned to my cost) if you start early, it's easier!

MZ: The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has actually started a voluntary program at the sales where .05% from each transaction is donated to aftercare efforts, with the sale companies matching each transaction with another .05%. May not seem like much, but it's a start!!

Thank you, Esther, for this story.

Yet another reason to strongly consider changing the sale / racing rules in some way to make mandatory the setting aside of a percentage of the sale price or purse to pay for retirement.

It doesn't even have to be a big percentage. Would 0.5% or something like that break the bank???

Anyways, Prime Cut is lovely and lucky.
