I would also like to add to this blog topic that I think training horses would be wonderful! I know it's hard work and you work 7 days a week but I still think it would be marvelous. Back in the mid '80's I saw an interview with Charlie Whittingham. The interviewer was bringing up his age and asked if he planned to retire. He told her he would be training until they buried him. He went on to say that he loved what he did for a living and that he would bounce out of bed every morning at 4 am and could wait to get to the track. Isn't that great? I mean to love your job so much that you can't wait to get there. I am envious of anyone who feels that way because you spend the better part of your life working. How wonderful for Charlie that he spent his life doing what he loved to do and being as successful as he was. He was a wonderful man too, whom I had the honor of knowing and being invited to his barn at Santa Anita to visit Sunday Silence. It was there that I thought it would be great to have that kind of life.

Obviously, they frown on incapacitated individuals on the basckstretch, so we know he's never spent one second there. Geez, nothing's further from the truth, a place where his statements usually find themselves. When Jack Van Berg used to come to Chicago to tend to his barn, I've seen him rub a colt's knees with oranges to tighten them. I've seen him take adhesive tape and tape up the vaginas of fillies to keep dirt from irritating them during the running of a race. THAT's what makes the difference between trainers, those who do things differently. Anyone can read Preston Burch's training books and pass their licensing. If he doesn't think there are trainers who add value to their work, he must excell as a school bus driver, mindlessly following his route day after day.

I think it's important to recognize accomplishments like this, and I wish Linda Rice much continued success.

I do wish horseracing would 'catch up' with the rest of society regarding women in certain positions- trainer, and jockey esp. As nonnonheinous mentioned, women are even overrepresented in other fields involving horses. I was a fan at Devon this year and most riders are women, only 1 or 2 men in some classes. Also, interestingly, there seemed to be many more female trainers of horses there. I think the backside of tracks today also include equal women to men, but as those working for trainers. Hopefully this will change, however slowly.

Like my Aunt who is a REAL cowgirl says, when Urban Cowboy came out it drove up the cost of 'cowboy' gear to the point that the 'real' cowboys/girls couldn't afford them.
Part of it may be the trainer is in a slump. Part of it may be that the guy trying the blinkers isn't really smart enough to actually apply the scientific methodology, they are guessing and unless they ARE just in a slump, they won't be around for long. A lot of guys who THINK they can train end up out of it before very long.

I gave you some specifics about the differences in the way they work them. Don't know what more I can say. I'm not going to say Todd does this and Linda does this and Wayne does this or Kiaran does that. I'm speaking in general terms the same way YOU did about football.

Maybe you should ask the trainers directly what they do, how they handle their barns. Some of the things may seem insignificant to you but aren't to those who KNOW that these horses react to external situations.

These trainers have to know how to read each and every horse, try to keep them out of any situation that might upset or affect them.

I guarantee if a trainer could tell you why they go into a slump when they're doing things just as they always have, they'd be thrilled.

Part of it is the horses a particular trainer gets in his/her barn. What's so amazing about some of these stats is these are people who DON'T get the best of the best.

It's a little easier to start culling and hitting the highest stats when you have the huge numbers some of them do, like Asmussen. Also, running in cheap claimers like he does in some circuits pumps up his stats.

YOU start the name calling by insulting people who are friends of some on here, calling out some people who have forgotten more about racing than you will ever know. That's counterproductive and causes most of us to react negatively to you.

Why you do it is a mystery to me other than the fact that you like to be the focus of attention. It's sad.

I have a site that I visit, that you can go to and see just what the reaction is to guys like that.

But, you probably are aware since you've been banned, ignored and argued with on many. Is that any fun?

Does it rev you up to turn a blog about a very nice lady who is having success at a prestigious meet, into a look at me I'm Draynay debacle?

You think you're the only athlete on here? You're not. Fact is one of the guys you battle with was a star athlete in his day.

As for the anger with you winning? It isn't that at all. Most are happy when others win. But, when a guy is a bad winner, a bigmouth troublemaker who disrespects his fellow fans, horse lovers, horsemen etc? Well, you get the reaction you always get.

Your claims to the real meanings of your comments? History can't be erased and your history on these and most blogs is one of negativity, gouging at others, disrespecting trainers and trying to stir up trouble. I've read your posts on other sites. You get the same reaction from totally different people than the ones who post here.

My comment about Chip, was edited. I questioned how you can be so different from the other blog, praising him in one breath and dissing him on here.

Trust me without the trainers and the owners? There wouldn't be any racing.

Hmmm, that village idiot comment???

Makes me wonder.

Michael Dickinson likes a lot of "normal' galloping (and 3 eggs and a "stout") on a more natural setting and lots of playtime, Michael Matz sort of does the same (no beer, though ;-)...

Larry Jones likes to gallop his horses himself so he can "feel" where their at...

Pletcher and Asmussen seem to be very clinical and analytical in a science kind of way,

Zito gets 'em fit and plugs them in where it "feels" right...

Chip Woolley does longer than normal gallops and tries to get jockeys to ride his horse the way he wants after hundreds of hours of watching his best horse run all of his races over and over, not the way they want;-)...

Ben Jones spent hundreds of hours imprinting on one colt the path he wanted him to take on the racetrack...

Tim Ice eased back on training so his good colt wouldn't buck his shins...

Jay Robbins babied, cajoled and placated and also nursed back to health...

Dutrow waits until he sees "It's good, it's all good"

The top trainers, who are they?

Are we talking trainers who have clients with unlimited $$$ to buy out the auction, who understand their horses and try to place them where they can win the big ones?

Are we talking trainers who have "poorer" clients who understand their horses and place them in the best spot for them to win, hoping they don't get claimed from them?

Are we talking about talented trainers (gifted, actually) who can truly spot a potential talent, buy them and then get them sold out from under them when they validate that trainer's assessment and go to another trainer?

This was supposed to be a harmless little blog about a trainer trying to pull off a historic feat. Instead, it has turned into squabble about...I dont even know what. Yeah, the cats vs. dogs argument sounds good right about now.

Anyway, back Friday with a Woodward preview.

If not, can I start talking about cats again?

Or about how we won the War of 1812 against you revolutionary guys?

CONGRATS Linda Rice. Do all of us proud!

Are you new here ? Last time I did that in the King Bishop I got yelled at and called names for winning. Why would I ever box 3 horses again ? I am not sure I could handle Tim and Greg picking on me for winning again. I am just going to pick whatever horses Jason tells me to so there is no chance of me winning again. I can't handle all the anger that comes with winning.

Shawn, dear Shawn, obviously you don't wear Cowboy Boots, or you'd be surprised at what you know, as well as the "nuances".. It's like being a natural blonde...if you are either one, you'll know what I mean...;-)

Yes, I am a natural blonde...Married to a Cowboy...LOL!

But let me be honest, many here have no idea what they are talking about and know nothing about preparing an athlete because many here never did much more than join French Club or BUY a ticket to a game. What I was looking for was substantive information about what differentiates one top trainer from another and all I got was a bunch of meaningless banter and a plethora of sophomoric name calling. I can tell you some football coaches work in full pads at full speed and believe in game type conditions at all times. While other coaches have a softer approach and don't like live hitting and prefer to coach by repeating plays again and again to perfect little nuances within the play like blocking schemes or passing angles. If you want more detail I can go on for about 30 minutes. So, I ask a simple question about how does one trainer differ from another or what do they do different and I am a village idiot ? You use the word science yet I see trainers at Monmouth who are 1 for 21 with blinkers on. Science ? 1 for 21 and you call that science ? Seems like it is the wrong science nearly EVERY TIME. I am not anti trainer I am trying to figure out why one wins at 30% and others win at 9%. If you have some specifics please share if not thanks for trying.
