I currently own 1 mare that he bred that is by Copelan and is almost the spitting image of Susan's Girl, and 2 other mares that are out of different Copelan mares. I love hearing and reading old stories about my g-uncle, so I sincerely appreciate you sharing yours, Mr. Campbell.

Do you really comprehend how good looking you make Palace Malice standing beside him??? :)

Just enjoying watching the happiness cover you from your dapper chapeau to your summer sport coat and the smile that exudes your pride. We are all so happy for you and Palace Malice. He is truly exceptional and you two make a perfect match!

Love all of your stories. But the real one being played out on the racetracks with you and Palace has to beat all!

From his obit, Mr. Hooper was just two months shy of 103 when he died in 2000. He and Xavier Roberts (Cabbage Patch dolls) were born in the little town of Cleveland, GA ... fifty-eight years apart.

On quarterhorses vs thoroughbreds, my highschool daughter and her filly, a Spectacular Bid grandaughter, vacationed and worked on a western style dude ranch. One of the college aged guys challenged her to s stakes race, his prize $450 saddle against her $250 cash to that there gate post accross the field. As soon as she agreed, he took off cowboying it accross the field. She followed, and when her filly realized it was a race, her ears perked up, and she went into overdrive. The poor boy on his prize quarterhorse, (winning match races at the rodeos), said that it was scary. The thoroughbred came by so fast that the he thought his horse was running backwards. She later traded the big fancy western saddle back for a smaller roping saddle she could use, and free horseshoing for the rest of the summer.

Ones willing to use 'oddball' stallions including ones they bred, owned and/or raced, like Verne Winchell and George Pope. All three of these gentlemen bred champions from the less fashionable end of the gene pool and left a supply of outcross material for the rest of us.

Another time I was at Mr. Hooper's farm late one autumn Saturday, the stallions were being groomed. They were giving Precisionist a bath, they showed me how he kind of giggled when you would brush his neck. Closed his eyes and turned up his lip and kind of shivered. While they were still at work a man rode up in a pick up truck and he had a rickety looking boat in the bed of the pick up truck, no on a trailer behind, in the pickup. He just got out and sat there on the tailgate, folded his arms and never said a word, looking impatient. I could see it looked like Mr. Hooper, but surely not. All of the grooms were laughing and said "that's Mr. Hooper's brother he's ready to go fishing. He is waiting on me."
