Naming a horse is a responsibility to the respect of our industry. The names of her horses were indeed nothing less than poetry. You thanked her for her wonderful friendship because you appreciated her passion and love for our industry. If you make it to the Spa in August we would love to buy you a drink-- and we will toast to the First Lady !

This world needs more people like them. I loved the names Ms. Mabee gave the foals. I agree, Horses are God's Greatest Gift to Humans. I pray someone will purchase Golden Eagle & continue the legacy.

So many horses today have really terrible names. Thoughtless, rude and just plain stupid. Years ago there was a filly entered in a sale in Fl. named Waste Of Feed. I had to go look at her and guess what, she was pretty and correct. How awful. Then there was a colt named Hamberger and he was alright. The Jockey Club should pay more attention. Please people, try to 'think' when naming your horse.

Every time I drive past the now empty pastures of Golden Eagle Farm, I think about the Mabees and their wonderful history. California racing needs someone to buy Golden Eagle and continue that history.

As for Betty Mabee's fine taste for selecting horse names...what a noble refreshing approach!

I particularly enjoyed the wit behind the fifth paragraph! Selecting a horse's name is on many ocassions a foretelling exercise. Just take a look to the "coincidences" behind the names of the first three finishers of the 1968 Triple Crown series. Great article and thanks again!

I always read the articles about those who leave us especially in the horse world. Readers need to know that owners of thoroughbred horses are not usually so self centered that they forget the less fortunate. The names of her horses said a lot about her loving character.

So thank you Mr. Cathro. I appreciated your kind article about a grand lady, her family should feel very blessed.
