All I need to know is that he's got that Slew connection. Slew's son, AP Indy (sire of Cocalero) really could have won the Triple Crown in '92 were it not for his unfortunate injury the morning of the Derby necessitating his being scratched. Cocalero is a bit late getting to the track, however. He'll have to improve quickly if he's to get to the top of his generation.

Meaning, he's 3. Won't be running in '11 Derby unless they change the conditons.

Thank you for reporting in-depth on the debut win of this colt. I was a huge fan of his mama, who beat Azeri during Azeri's prime and who was one of only a handful of fillies to ever sweep Santa Anita's three-race La Canada series, and it looks like Cocalero has inherited her bulk, and her bravado.

As an interesting tidbit, I believe Got Koko is the highest-earning Texas-bred female of all time, and the second-highest-earning Texas-bred of either gender, behind only Groovy. It will be a fitting legacy if she leaves behind a good one, and I wish Darley well with this promising boy.

I'm happy every time I see an A.P. Indy in the winner's circle, and this time was certainly no exception. I remember Cocalero's dam, so that made it extra interesting. I certainly will be following his hopefully long and illustrious career. Is it too early to wager on the 2011 Ky Derby winner?
