Unlike some past Godolphin horses who've run in the Derby, this horse won't be short of conditioning -- and my guess is that it will be "all systems go" on Saturday. This outfit has shipped in and won G-1 races on three continents -- in France and elsewhere in Europe, in Australia and Japan. Now, after predicting years ago that they'd win a Derby within five years and failing, their day has finally come. This entrant is an unflappable sort -- exactly what you want when perhaps 160,000 spirited fans will be playing havoc with the high-strung types, several of which might wash out before the race. He's tractable with decent tactical speed, meaning he won't have to close from the clouds like some of those entered. The only thing annoying to me is that I e-mailed a friend about this horse being a live longshot in January, before he made his 3-year-old debut (at which time I could have probably gotten 100-1 or better in the Las Vegas future books!) and while I only have a small bet on him at 16-1 in Pool 3, that's still likely more than he'll be going off come Saturday, particularly in lieu of Quality Road being scratched. His placing -- on a wet track when NOTHING closing -- in his last race in the UAE, against the other Godolphin horse who he'd beaten twice previously, Regal Ransom, is not the full indication of this horse's talents. It's my guess that the trainer, Saeed bin Sucoor, will have this horse more fully cranked come Saturday. Ramon Dominguez gets his first Derby winner -- and Street Cry (i.e. Street Sense) gets his second! As a postscript, don't underestimate Regal Ransom's ability to carry his speed further than most exopect, particularly in a race where there's a paucity of other speed now that Quality Road has scratched!

I have liked Desert Party ever since i saw him in last years Sanford. One thing i noticed about him is that to me he seemed to out size the field. He's a big beautiful colt, related to SS, Zenyatta and others, so he should have loads of talent and be able to get the dist. I also see he's working nicely over the track, which already gives him an advantage to those who have yet to work over it. Plus he seems to be coming up to the Derby in fabulous condition. There is no reason to think this horse can't win.

Why don't you study the actual success rate of the fastest previewers at all the 2yo sales and see what Mr. Scanlon and the other "warp-speed" cowboys say about that?

Our group did exactly that with the Barretts March 2yo sales. Beginning with the 1999 sale we researched the facts on the fastest previewers in the last nine years, including their career earnings, number of starts, seller, buyer, and sales price (as yearlings and 2yo's). Let's just say it didn't make Barretts very happy with us.

Anyone who would like a copy of this fact sheet can write us at ctbaboardwatch@yahoo.com and we'll be happy to send it you.
