You are truly gifted. This is yet another case for keeping a horse in training, and letting them enjoy doing what they are bred to do, and not rush them in to the breeding shed.

Ahhh! The memories! I still have a Smarty Jones hat and a button that says Go Smarty Go. Some horses have a way of grasping us and letting us feel that special charisma that makes us hopeful year after year for a triple crown champ.

One of the best stories in racing history. And you write so beautifully. It's tough knowing the outcome ( your article I'm sure is forthcoming on the Belmont) but Smarty and his fans never gave up. Seeing him at Three Chimneys was so amazing. I never thought of him as a small horse, but now having seen Dynaformer and Zenyatta I suppose he is. What a champion. Thanks and always look forward to your articles. I was initially worried about his being shipped, but I feel he will be well cared for since your report.

Steve, great reminiscing article on Smarty Jones. I would truly love to see or have seen or will see your writing on and after Easy Goer's 1989 Belmont Stakes romp. Your writing is truly superb. Did you or do you have any archives from the Easy Goer/Sunday Silence days?
