Living continually under the actual or potential need to be alert and prepared for action is one of the major causes of stress (and hence stress-related disorders) - and we already know the damage stress causes to the human mind and body. From heart attacks and ulcers to addictions of various kinds and depression/suicide, constant stress kills people - and dead people aren&amp;#39;t very productive! Being available for bona fide emergencies is fine and probably a good thing, but not everything is an emergency. In most situations, instant gratification of every wish or curiosity is not necessary or good.&lt;/p&gt;

But, Bloodhorse, you are the site that I sneak in a few times a day when I need a mental break from my dissertation analysis! I think it makes me more productive in the long run.
