About Maiden Watch

This blog is devoted to those Thoroughbreds that have yet to reach the Winner’s Circle, the Maidens. Each week we will look at several maiden races at tracks like Gulfstream, the Fair Grounds, and Santa Anita, highlighting notable maidens.  Notable maidens are those who are from stakes producing families or out of stakes mares, or who sold for a substantial amount at auction.  Emphasis will be placed on those who are making their first starts.  The next day, we will recap the results of the races.

As 2-year old season approaches, we hope to use the Maiden Watch to monitor the progress of prominent first-year stallions like Smarty Jones, Birdstone, Medaglia d’Oro, Speightstown, and Pleasantly Perfect.  We will follow their first offspring from their first workouts to their first time on the track to the Winner’s Circle.
