Today's Races - February 15, 2008

Today is State-bred day at Maiden Watch, as we will look at a New York-bred race at Aqueduct, a Florida-bred race at Gulfstream, and a California-bred race at Santa Anita.  This is a good lesson in relativity, especially when looking at auction results.  A sale price of $20,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale is not usually worthy of note, but the same price at a regional sale might be.  It may be necessary to look at the averages for a sale in addition to raw numbers.

Aqueduct Race 4
Maiden Special Weight
5 ½ furlongs
3-Year Olds
New York Breds

First-Timers:  Brecciate and Wheel’n and Able

Brecciate (Rock Slide – Ms. D. D. Walton by Known Fact) sold for $120,000 as a Two-Year-Old at OBS in April. Brecciate is also a half-brother to two winners including Twice Infallible who was a stakes winner in Trinidad.

Wheel’n and Able (Wheelaway – Never Not Able by Double Negative) is a half-brother to two winners.

Of those who have started, Gold Deputy (Precise End – Glory Won by Air Forbes Won), boasts the best family notes as his dam has produced 4 winners including Rich in Glory, a winner of over $350,000.

Gulfstream Park Race 9

Florida Breds
Post Time: 5:13 PM; HRTV

First-Timers:  Erie Won, Timetolitethestar, Korissa’s Miracle, Saber Jet Reprized, Scorisca, Is It Fire, and Nebraska Nature.

No sales standouts among the first-timers, but several with good family connections.  Is It Fire (Is It True – Shooting Fire by Caveat) is a half-sister to 2 stakes winners, including Exchanging Fire who has won over $220,000 and is still in training.  The dam of Scorsica (Scorpion – Straw Boyera by Stawberry Road (AUS)) has produced 6 winners from 8 runners, and Korissa’s Miracle (Straight Man – Next Kindofmiracle by Distinctive Pro) and Saber Jet Reprized (Reprized – Jet Trade by Tri Jet) are both half-sisters to 4 winners.

Trips or Better posses the most impressive family credentials among those who have raced.  She is a half-sister to 8 winners, 2 of which won stakes.  These included Ruskin winner of over $450,000.

Santa Anita Race 4
6 ½ furlongs
3-Year Old Fillies
California Breds
Post Time: 5:34 PM; HRTV

First-Timers: Quickly Gone (Muqtarib – Donna B. Quick) and Saundree (Freespool – Moo Moon by Al Mamoon).

Quickly Gone’s dam has produced 3 winners from 3 runners. Saundree is a half-sister to one winner.

Among those who have raced, Baja Baby (Bertrando – Cape Boundary by Boundary) sold as a 2-year old for $24,000 (at Barretts January 2007 Mixed Sale, where 2-year olds averaged $8,346) and Beau Chant (Beau Genius – Song of Summer by General Meeting) sold for $35,000 as a yearling (almost $10,000 above the average for the sale).  Remember Seattle (Souvenir Copy – Seattle Drama by Seattle Slew) is full or ½ to 5 winners and Paloma’s Flight (Benchmark – Exclusive Report by Private Account) is ½ to 4 winners.
