Fujita handled his first start like a pro, leading almost the whole race and holding off a stubborn Motor Patrol who shouldn't be a maiden much longer. First-Timers Silver Jag, War Ruler, Hatch, and Mr. Universe all got off to slow starts, but Silver Jag, War Ruler, and Hatch showed some interest at the end to finish 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. Of these, Silver Jag looked especially promising as he gained ground in the stretch. The biggest mystery about this race is how a Todd Pletcher trained, John Velazquez ridden horse went off at odds of 8-1.
