Will Tomisue's Cat be Polite to My Little Dragon?; Fair Grounds Race 5, March 15

Fair Grounds Race 5
Maiden Special Weight
About 5.5 furlongs Turf
3-Year Old Fillies
Post Time: 3:34 PM; HRTV

I was attracted to this race because of the large number of first-time starters, as half the field debuts today.  The firsters are:  Fan Dame (Lear Fan – Dame Sylvieguilhem by Nureyev), Louisiana Roux (Dayjur – Snatchandgrabit by Ramirez), Tomisue’s Cat (Storm Cat – Tomisue’s Delight by A. P. Indy), My Little Dragon (Cactus Ridge – So Soulful by Real Quiet), Cape of Bradford (Cape Town – Trustbuster by Housebuster), and Polite (Elusive Quality – Slew and Easy by Slew o’ Gold).

Among these, the clear pedigree standout is Tomisue’s Cat whose dam, Tomisue’s Delight, won $1,207,537 and won or placed in 11 graded stakes races including wins in the Ruffian (gr. I), Personal Ensign (gr. I), and Falls City (gr. III), plus a second in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Tomisue’s Delight is a full-sister to Mineshaft.  She has produced 2 winners including the stakes-placed Save Big Money who has earned $191,133 through 2008.  Save Big Money is a full-brother to today’s runner, Tomisue’s Cat. I do wonder whether 5.5 furlongs will be far enough for Tomisue’s Cat, as her dam took at least a mile to get going.

Another with notable family connections is Polite.  Polite’s dam has produced 3 winners including graded stakes winner Conserve who earned $628,132.  He won or placed in 5 stakes on the turf including the Maker’s Mark Mile (gr. II) and the Firecracker Breeders’ Cup (gr. II).

Louisiana Roux is a half- or full- sister to 3 winners including the stakes winners Arcus and Perfect Harmony.

The top-seller among these was My Little Dragon who brought $42,000 as a yearling.  My Little Dragon is the first foal out of an unraced mare, but her dam is a full- or half-sister to 4 winners including the stakes winner, Twilight Meteor who has earned $472,591 through 2008.

The experienced horses do not feature a sales-standout, but Amaretta’s Way (Giant’s Causeway – Amaretta by Woodman) is out of dam who earned $1116,480 including a 2nd in the Regret Stakes (gr III.) on the turf.  Amaretta has produced one winner, Triple Nine Fine who has earned $48,092 through 20008.

The dam of Private Battle (Military – Energica by Affirmed) has produced 2 winners including Positively Wild who earned $138,720.

I like to follow the yearlings as they move on to their two year old races and maybe on to the Triple Crown. Is this a place to talk about them?

abe1947 - thanks for your comments. This blog is devoted to maidens - each week we look at several maiden races and comment on some of the entries and the results. As the 2-year old season approaches, we will be primarily focusing on 2-year olds, especially those from prominent 1st-crop stallions like Smarty Jones and yes, some of these may end up on the Triple Crown trail next year. For more about the goal of the blog, see the About section.
