Trifecta King will Meetyouatyogi's in the South of France

The filly Trifecta King takes to the Hollywood Cushion on Thursday.  Trifecta King is a bay by Peace Rules out of the unraced Unbridled mare, Mamita. Her dam is a half-sister to Church Service who is grade II-placed and most recently (on March 29, 2008) finished 2nd in the Tokyo City Handicap. Trifecta King sold for $10,000 as a yearling and $45,000 as a 2-year old.

No other 1st-year sires are represented in this race.  The sale topper was Cosmic Queen (Stormy Atlantic - Well At the Top (IRE) by Sadler's Wells) who sold for $320,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select 2-year olds in Training Sale. She is the 2nd foal out of a mare who is a half- or full-sister to 5 winners including the stakes winner, Tiger Shark, who won the Criterium du Languedoc-Prix Paul Guichou as a 2-year old.

Another with impressive sales credentials is Lucky Losty (Indian Charlie - Glimmer Twin by Kris S.) who sold for $190,000 as a yearling. Lucky Losty is the first foal out of the mare Glimmer Twin who earned $32,982. Glimmer Twin is a half-sister to 5 winners, including the stakes winner Draw who earned $278,363.

Retraceable (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Embraceable by Dehere) was on track at the Ocala Training Center where she worked 3 furlongs in :38.20. Retraceable is out of the stakes-placed mare, Embraceable. Embraceable is a a half-sister to 7 winners including Chilito who won the Flamingo Stakes (gr. III). Chilito also won 2 of 4 starts as a 2-year old.

At Delaware Park, the Pleasantly Perfect colt, Perfect Song, turned in a time of :39.60 for 3 furlongs. Perfect Song is out of the Prospector's Music mare, Prospector's Song. Prospector's Song was a stakes winner who earned $264,256.  She broke her maiden in her 2-year old debut and placed third in the Magnolia Stakes in her second start that year. She is the dam of one winner, the stakes-placed Song of the Saints.

Boomtown (colt; Speightstown - Day Lily by A. P. Indy) went 3 furlongs at Fairplex in a time of :37.80. Day Lily was unraced, but she is a daughter of 1992 champion 2-year old filly, Eliza. Eliza earned over a million dollars in her career (including $808,000 as a 2-year old) and won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I), Alcibiades (gr. Another Speightstown colt, Mission Gap, worked 2 furlongs at Winding Oaks Farm in :26.00. Mission Gap's dam, Chase Gap is by Hennessy and was stakes-placed with career earnings of $125,021. Mission Gap is her first foal.

Saardona (filly; Saarland - Golden Penny by Touch Gold) worked 3 furlongs at Churchill Downs recording a time of :39.20. Saardona's dam earned $67,554, but did not win as a 2-year old. Saardona is her first foal.

Finally, a note for those of you who have asked why we aren't profiling other stallions.  When this blog started, we decided to follow several first-year stallions. Users suggested others and we compiled a final list of: Birdstone, Congaree, Medaglia d'Oro, Peace Rules, Pleasantly Perfect, Saarland, Smarty Jones, and Speightstown. This is not meant to imply that these horses will be more or less successful than other 1st-crop sires.  They were primarily chosen because of their name recognition from their racing careers. In addition to the core list, other first-year sires will always receive attention within our feature races. However, I do not feel it is possible to follow every first-year stallion in-depth. I would consider adding one or two more to the list (preferably a stallion who hasn't had a winner yet) and will try to post a poll asking for recommendations in the next day or two.

Karen - thanks for the update.  I hope that they don't change his name, but the new owners might be Yankees fans.

K. Rob - thanks for the update.  Lord Shanakill was on my radar. I was waiting to talk about him when we had our first U.S. Speightstown starter, but I guess I waited too long. He finished 3rd in his debut, correct?
