Medaglia d'Onore vs. Persian

It's not exactly Big Brown vs. Curlin, but Monday at Churchill Downs two of our horses go head-to-head, as both Medaglia d'Onore (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Always Ready by Dixieland Band) and Persian (colt; Peace Rules - Lady Cheryl by Williamstown) are entered in a 5 furlong race. As an added bonus, they will break side-by-side from the starting gate, Persian is in hole 5 and Medaglia d'Onore in hole 6. Let's hope that they don't eliminate each other at the start.

Medaglia d'Onore finished 6th in his only start running evenly behind the ultra impressive Mr Mistoffelees. Medaglia d'Onore sold for $40,000 as a yearling. His dam, Always Ready, is a half-sister to More Than Ready, millionaire and grade I winner.  More Than Ready won 5 out of 7 starts as a 2-year old (and finished 3rd in another start) including victories in the Tremont (gr. III), and Sanford (gr. II).

Persian finished 4th in his initial start, showing speed before tiring. Persian is out of Lady Cheryl, a stakes winning Williamstown mare who earned $189,054. Lady Cheryl did not run as a 2-year old, but she has produced a 2-year old winner. Persian sold for $32,000 as a yearling.

Out of the Van (Van Nistelrooy - Festina by Festin (ARG)) finished 5th in the same race as Medaglia d'Onore. Out of the Van is a half-brother to 2 winners.

Familiar to Persian is Favorite Moon (Malibu Moon - Snooze Bar by Darn That Alarm), who finished 3rd in their race on May 7. Favorite Moon's dam earned $102,690 and is half-sister to 6 winners including 2 stakes winners.

First-year sire Cuvee has 2 in the race, Saber Dancer (Cuvee - Auction Cat by Storm Bird) who finished 5th in his only start on a sloppy Churchill Downs track on May 14 and Cuvex (Cuvee - Exbourne Free by Exbourne) who is unraced. Saber Dancer is a half-brother to 3 winners including the stakes winner, Cat Quatorze. Cuvex sold for $50,000 as a yearling and is out of stakes-placed mare who earned $107,024 and was 1 for 1 as a 2-year old. She has produced 2 winners from 2 starters. Cuvee has had one winner from 8 starters.

The top-seller from this group is Bullion Cache (Seeking the Gold - Cash Deal by Danzig) who sold for $320,000 as a yearling. Bullion Cash's dam, Cash Deal, earned $79,360 and finished 3rd in the Alcibiades (gr. II) as a 2-year old. Cash Deal is the dam of two winners.

The only filly in the race is Mine All Mine (Belong to Me - Pulcinella by Unbridled). Mine All Mine has started twice, finishing 4th in a Maiden Special Weight at Keeneland and 6th in the Kentucky Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs on May 1.
