Rachel is the Best Lass; Silk Third

Rachel Alexandra jumped out of the gate and went right to the lead. Favorite Best Lass emerged from the pack and attempted to run our filly down, but Rachel showed some guts and refused to let that one by. At the end, she was pulling away and won by over a length. Meanwhile, C. S. Silk was squeezed at the start and was shuffled back to last.  But, after settling, she started picking up horses.  She didn't threaten the top pair, but she was clearly the best of the rest. C. S. Silk also survived a claim of foul before securing the third spot.

Another impressive 2-year old performance was turned in earlier on the Churchill card when Ocean Colors, a 2-year old filly out of champion Winning Colors, won her debut by 5 1/4 lengths. By Orientate, Ocean Colors is the next-to-last foal out of the Derby winner. Read more about her performance here.

Oconee and Shoe Strap are Made for Success and Thats a Good Thing

Oconee (Congaree - Chenoa by Wild Again) makes his debut in this 5 furlong race at Churchill Downs. His dam was unraced and has yet to produce a winner, but she is a half-sister to four graded performers including Demaloot Demashoot who earned $574,825 and won or placed in 8 graded stakes. He also won 2 races as a 2-year old and finished 3rd in the Iroquois (gr. III) that same year. Shoe Strap (Birdstone - Boot Strap by Storm Boot) makes his 2nd start. In his debut on May 21, he hesitated at the start and then freaked out a bit when the eventually winner crossed in front of him. Since that race, he has had some gate work so hopefully his start will be improved. He may also benefit from the outside post. Shoe Strap is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 2 winners, both of which won as 2-year olds.

Also coming out of the May 21 race at Churchill were Good Sermon (Honour and Glory - Sermon by Pulpit), War Lap (War Chant - Indy Five Hundred by A. P. Indy), and Pointing Home (Point Given - Palace Story by Palace Music).
Good Sermon, who finished 2nd on May 21, sold for $95,000 as a yearling and is the 2nd foal out of a winning mare who earned $52,674. His dam's first foal, Clearly Foxy, has earned $121,918 through 2008 and won the Natalma Stakes (CAN-III) as a 2-year old. War Lap was the even money favorite in the May 21 race, but could manage only a third place finish. War Lap sold for $150,000 as a yearling and is the first foal out of the grade I winner, Indy Five Hundred, who won the Garden City Breeders' Cup (gr I) and earned $244,510. She was also a 2-year old winner. Finishing 4th on May 21 was Pointing Home. A $50,000 yearling, Pointing Home is a half- or full- brother to 6 winners, 3 of which won as 2-year olds including Boot Scootin Daddy who won the Michigan Futurity as a 2-year old and earned $118,070 in his career. All the other entries in this race are making their debuts.

First-Year sire, Seattle Fitz, is represented by Fitzaslew (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Basic Instinct by Polish Numbers) who sold for $52,000 as a yearling. Fitzaslew is the 2nd starter for Seattle Fitz who won $594,371 in a grade II stakes winning career. However, Seattle Fitz did not race as a 2-year old. Fitzaslew's dam, Basic Instinct, is the dam of one winner and a half-sister to grade II stakes winner, Touch Love.

Thats a Good Thing (Lion Heart - Competent Sort by Cahill Road) is by first-year sire, Lion Heart who has had 6 winners from 10 starters and 1 stakes winner. Thats a Good Thing's dam was stakes-placed and she has produced 2 winners.

Bringing $160,000 as a yearling was Proud Jefe (Proud Citizen - Besige by Polish Numbers). Proud Jefe is the first foal out of a winning mare who had a first and a second in 3 2-year old starts.

Selling for $45,000 as a yearling was Made for Success (Successful Appeal - Made for Satin by Premiership). His dam, Made for Satin, won $100,771 over a 45 race career. Made for Satin has produced 5 winners including the stakes winner, Mapp Hill who won the Sugar Bowl Stakes as a 2-year old.

Western Prospector (West Acre - Pleasant Dilemma by Premiership) sold for $34,000 as a 2-year old. His dam, Pleasant Dilemma, won or placed in 12 stakes including victories in the Prom Stakes and Holly Stakes as a 2-year old. Pleasant Dilemma has produced 6 winners (2 of which won as 2-year olds) from 7 to race.

Atsatsuki (Yonaguska - Darned If You Dont by Darn That Alarm) is a half-brother to 4 winners (2 2-year old winners).

The dam of Coughsgone (More Than Ready - Norrsken by Northern Jove) earned $76,227 and won 7 races. She has produced 7 winners including stakes winners Pancho Norte and Bagshot who won the I'm Smokin Stakes as a 2-year old.
