Most of the entries are coming off of their maiden scores, including Medaglia d'Onore. The exceptions, Lyin' Heart and Segal, are both trained by Steve Asmussen. Lyin' Heart won the TTA Sales Futurity at Lone Star. But since that race is restricted to horses sold at specific Texas auctions (or Accredited Texas-Bred Thoroughbreds, if there are openings in the race), there is some question about the level of competition found there. Segal broke his maiden at Churchill and then finished 3rd in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine on June 15. In addition to Medaglia d'Onore and Segal, Screen Your Friend, Theregoesjojo, and My Dominick James all broke their maidens while Maiden Watch was watching. Curly is by far the most inexperienced runner in this race, as he is making just his 4th start. Only one other horse broke his maiden last out, Bohemia Street, who also won a 1 1/16 race at Arlington. However, Bohemia Street's race was a Maiden Claiming contest rather than a Maiden Special Weight. Only one horse has more than one win, Bud Symonds, who earned his 2nd victory last time out in a non-winners of 2, claiming race. The favorite in the race will most likely be Command Sgt. Major. Two starts back Command Sgt. Major finished 3rd behind Tiz Now Tiz Then, who won the Iowa Derby on June 28. There does seem to be a decent amount of speed in the race, so it should set up well for Curly's closing kick.

All seven runners are making their debuts in this Maiden Claiming race.

Rule of Motion (Peace Rules - Poetic Motion by Green Dancer) has been working at Philadelphia Park the past couple months. His last work was at 5 furlongs, which I like since it's longer than this race. Peace Rules' 12 runners have made 22 total starts, recording 3 wins, 2 seconds, and 4 thirds. Rule of Motion, who sold for $30,000 as a yearling, is out of a mare who was a 2-year old winner and has produced 2 winners. One of her winners won as a 2-year old.

Alma Mater, the dam of Australis Day (Five Star Day - Alma Mater by Honor Grades), was a debut winner at 2 and stakes-placed that same year. In her career, she placed in 5 stakes and earned $189,542. Australis Day is her 2nd foal. Her first foal has finished 2nd once in 4 starts this year.
