No Party for Smarty Marty

Smarty Marty was a little reluctant to load, but she came out of the gate in good order and secured a good position in 4th. However, she tired in the stretch and faded back to 7th. It was, however, a good learning experience. The winner was Mine All Mine, the filly who had been running against the boys. She took the lead and never looked back, to win by more than 9 lengths. Overall, this was a race that belonged to the experienced runners, as they filled the top 3 spots. Mud, in addition to all the other new things, was probably too much for the first-timers.

Into My Soul (Pleasantly Perfect - Stop Traffic by Cure the Blues) debuts in a race scheduled to go 5.5 furlongs on the turf. I say scheduled, because the way it was raining yesterday I am not sure whether they will be running on the turf on Friday. Usually when handicapping an off-the-turf race, you should pay close attention to the Main Track Only horses. However, that may not matter in a 2-year old race where only one horse (Musca) has turf experience and 8 are first-timers.

Into My Soul, who was a $50,000 2-year old, has been working at Saratoga for the past month and a half, including one work on the turf. Stop Traffic, the dam of Into My Soul, earned $864,518 and won or placed in 18 stakes including victories in the Ballerina (gr. I) and the Santa Monica (gr. I). Stop Traffic also won her 2-year old debut. Into My Soul is a half-brother to one winner. Pleasant Perfect's 5 runners have made 6 total starts, recording 2 wins, and 2 seconds.

The only runner with turf experience is Musca (Orientate - Southern Sandra by Dixie Brass) who finished 4th on the Belmont turf on July 11. Southern Sandra, the dam of Musca, was a stakes winner who earned $165,917 and also won as a 2-year old. Southern Sandra has produced the winner Dixie Marrone who won both on dirt and turf and who has earned $118,941 through 2008.

Join in the Dance (Sky Mesa - Dance Darling by Devil's Bag) has finished 2nd twice, once in the slop at Churchill Downs on May 14 and once on the Arlington Polytrack on June 8. Join in the Dance's dam was unraced, but she is a half-sister to 11 winners including stakes winners Darling Danzig and Misnomer.

Unbridle's Dream (Unbridled's Song - Gaviola by Cozzene) who sold for $475,000 as a 2-year old, finished 5th in his only race at Churchill Downs on June 19. His dam was a grade I stakes winner who earned $589,142 and won or placed in 8 graded stakes. She was also a 2-year old winner.

The last entrant with experience is Mr. Dr. Professor (Menifee - Color Me Special by River Special) who also finished 5th in his only start at Churchill Downs on July 2. Mr. Dr. Professor's dam was stakes-placed at 2 and 3 and earned $225,760. Mr. Dr. Professor is a half-brother to one winner.

Selling for $350,000 as 2-year old was Charlie Trumper (Giant's Causeway - Penniless Heiress by Pentelicus). Charlie Trumper is a half-brother to three stakes winners including Wildcat Heir who earned $424,460 in a career that included a win in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (gr. I).

His dam, Tenga, was a stakes-winner as a 2-year old and has produced 4 winners including grade I stakes winner, Startac. Startac earned $703,718 in a career that included wins in the Secretariat (gr. Seal Team (Trippi - Sunk by Polish Navy), who sold for $75,000 as a 2-year old, is by Trippi who was recently exported to South Africa. Seal Team is out of a winning mare who has produced 4 winners.

African Storm (Johannesburg - Aly Quatorze by Louis Quatorze) is out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 6 winners including stakes winner, Kool Humor. Kool Humor earned $242,899 in a 27 race career.

Stomp (Put It Back - Looks Like a Gem by Distant View) and Pious David (Aldebaran - Hamba by Easy Goer) are the Main Track Only entrants for the race. Stomp, who sold for $65,000 as a 2-year old, is out of a winning mare who has produced one winner from one to race. Pious David was a $180,000 yearling and is a half-brother to Monba, winner of the 2008 Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). Monba also won 2 races as a 2-year old. News and Notes

Desert Party (Street Cry - Sage Cat by Tabasco Cat), who cost $2.1 million as a 2-year old in training, won the Sanford Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga on July 24. It was only a four horse field, after the mud prompted the scratching of Bullion Cache, Dagnabit, and Notonthesamepage. Still, Desert Party was impressive in victory. Read more about the race (and see a replay) here.

Guadalcanal makes his first start since finishing 7th in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. This time, he runs in a Maiden Special race at Ellis Park on July 25. It's 1 1/8 miles on the turf (a cut-back in distance for Guadalcanal) and Guadalcanal is the morning line favorite at 5-2. Post time is 6:00 eastern and it should be carried on TVG.

That was a very solid effort by Guadalcanal to break his maiden at Ellis Park. Maybe he just likes the turf more then the Belmont dirt.
