Saarlandisourland Seeks Prolific Glory

August Wins Despite a Rush from Nan

You could tell during the load for this race that it was composed mostly of first-time starters. First, Nan kept bucking every time she started to enter the gate (but loaded fine after Edgar Prado hopped off). Then, when they were loading Scintillation, they shoved her in and she came right out the other side. However, the other fillies stood quietly while she was maneuvered back in. At the break, Scintillation stumbled and Stone Legacy (Birdstone) was squeezed. Scintillation recovered, but Stone Legacy's race was pretty much over at that point. She jogged around the track in twelfth. Meanwhile, up front, August Rush went right to the lead with Remedy pursuing. Remedy tired, but several fillies were closing, including Nan whose progress was stopped in traffic. Nan was flying at the end, but too late to catch August Rush. Also closing well at the end was Scintillation. Nan is definitely one to watch in the future, as she showed a willingness to go between horses that you often don't see in young horses, and she has that acceleration that you look for in a turf horse.

Code Runs Over Pick's Express

Purely by Chance took the early lead with Pick's Express (Speightstown) chasing. Code Runner was stalking and went by the top pair, drawing off to win by more than 3. B B's Song came from off the pace to take second money. Pick's Express tired to third. It was interesting to watch the tote board in this one. The first click that I saw had B B's Song at 2-5 and Pick's Express at 40-1. When they came out of the gate, Pick's Express was 8-5 and B B's Song 4-1 (the winner, Code Runner, was 3-1).

2. Prolific

Our first race at a mile. Should be fun. All of the horses are experienced, but none has run farther than 5 furlongs.

Prolific (Medaglia d'Oro - Quadrahope by Quadratic) makes his 3rd start at Monmouth Park after finishing 5th on June 20 and 6th on July 18. In both of those starts, Prolific acted up in the post parade. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the distance increase. Prolific is out of a mare who won once and placed 2nd once in 2 2-year old starts. Selling for $37,000 as a yearling, Prolific is a half-brother to 5 winners including El Prado Essence who earned $890,281 and won or placed in 16 stakes. As a 2-year old, El Prado Essence won her debut and finished 3rd in the Ontario Debutante Stakes.

Finishing behind Prolific (in 8th place) on July 18 was Naughty and Bold (Full Mandate - Kissin the Breeze by Kissin Kris), who previously had finished 4th on June 27. Naughty and Bold, who sold for $20,000 as a 2-year old, is the first foal out of a mare who is a half-sister to 4 winners, 2 of which won as 2-year olds.

Dear Cat (Catienus - Dear by Island Whirl) has made three starts, 2 at 4.5 furlongs and most recently at 5 furlongs on June 29. Dear Cat is the 2nd foal out of a winning mare who is a full-sister to Foreverness who won or placed in 8 stakes including a win in the Fort Macy Handicap (gr. III). Overall, Foreverness earned $388,375.

Making his third start is Ghost Five (Grand Slam - Unsurpassed by Unbridled), who finished 6th at 4.5 furlongs on June 17, and 5th at 5 furlongs on June 26. Ghost Five is the only horse without Monmouth experience, as he previously ran at Calder. A $13,000 yearling, Ghost Five is out of a mare who was a 2-year old winner and earned $108,780 in her career. Ghost Five is her 2nd foal and the first to reach the races.

Grand Gulch (Gulch - Capote's Niner by Capote) made his only start on June 6, where he finished 5th in a 5 furlong race. Selling for $45,000 as a yearling, Grand Gulch's dam was a winner and she has produced one winner from one to race.

Aspiring Nick (Graeme Hall - Aspiring Sue by Proof) lone start was a 4.5 furlong contest on May 18 in which he was 6th. Aspiring Sue, dam of Aspiring Nick, was a winner and has produced 2 winners.

Lord Shanakill at Goodwood

At Goodwood on July 30, Lord Shanakill (Speightstown - Green Room by Theatrical (IRE)) has been entered in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (Eng-II). It will be Lord Shanakill's 4th start.
