Lord Shanakill Second at Goodwood

Lord Shanakill (Speightstown) finished a good 2nd in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (ENG-II) July 30 at Goodwood behind Orizaba (IRE). Orizaba, by the Lure stallion, Orpen, has won 2 races in his 3 race career. Prior to today's contest, he had finished 5th in the Coventry Stakes (Eng-II), behind Lord Shanakill. Read more about the race here. The results can be viewed here.

Akilina Sneaks Up on Glory Gold and Saarlandisourland

Glory Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) looked great in the paddock, but she's a big filly and I was worried that five and a half furlongs might not be long enough. On the other hand, Saarlandisourland (Saarland) is a little thing and may need to grow up a bit. The one that caught my eye before the race was Sneakin Up.

Once the gates opened, Best for Last and Akilina dueled early, but Best for Last fell back. Akilina, however, was not left alone, as Sneakin Up closed well to join her. At the end, it was Akilina by just a head. Glory Gold was off slow and then ran greenly in the stretch to finish 4th. Saarlandisourland was off ok, but soon fell back. She did manage to almost catch the tiring Best for Last.

Nick Aspires to Beat Prolific

The complexion of this one changed when odds-on choice Ghost Five went to his knees at the break, losing jockey Jose Lezcano. This left Aspiring Nick all alone on the lead. Prolific gave chase, but in the end Aspiring Nick was the winner by a good nine lengths. However, Prolific was well clear of the third place horse, Naughty and Bold. Ghost Five seemed to be unhurt in the incident at the break, as he ran along with the rest of the field. However, Lezcano suffered a concussion.
