How are we doing?

Since we have no entries for August 1 (don't worry, Saturday promises to be a full day) and only one result for July 31, I thought it might be a good time to review how our boys are doing so far. As always, we'll look at them in alphabetical order.

Breaking News is a Lang Peak in Front of Stone Skipper

Breaking News took the lead out of the gate, followed by Doneraile's Peak and Stone Skipper (Birdstone). Dovehunter Jones was extremely rank, tried to run up on the heels of the horse in front of him and had to be pulled back. Stone Skipper ran out of gas in the stretch and faded to 7th. Meanwhile, Breaking News was tiring and Lang Heart was closing, but Breaking News was able to hold on for victory.

9 Comments:

It's nice to see the early results for Medaglia D'Oro and Peace rules...I always thought they were such honest horses and it's nice to see the indications they will be honest sires.

Why is Lion Heart not listed?

When you say "our boys" do you mean you have financial interests in these stallions?

El Kabong 01 Aug 2008 10:18 AM

El Kabong - When this blog was first started, we decided to follow several 1st-crop sires. Readers suggested others and we ended up with a list of 8 - Birdstone, Congaree, Medaglia d'Oro, Peace Rules, Pleasantly Perfect, Saarland, Smarty Jones, and Speightstown.

Other first-crop stallions are discussed when they have offspring in our races, but the stallions above are followed in more detail. Lion Heart's name certainly comes up a lot since he is the leading freshman sire, but he is not on the main list.

This is not a list of the top first-crop sires, this is a list of how the ones that we have been following have been doing so far.

I do not have a financial interest in these stallions or in any stallion. They are "our" boys because we have been following them closely for the past 5 months.

smarty jones has 3 winners. you forgot to mention la equivocada..his filly who won in puerto rico by 5 legnths.

phillllly sarrrr 01 Aug 2008 12:34 PM

phillllly sarrrr - Smarty Jones has 2 winners, La Equivocada and Keefer. The horses listed are not his winners, they are his Top Earners.  La Equivocada has earned $6,270. Cosmo Pirate, who finished 2nd in one start, has earned $25,950.

Blood-Horse Staff 01 Aug 2008 12:43 PM

Thank you so much for the summary!!!   Now I will sit down and watch the top earners of each first year stud on Racereplays.com.  This is really nice.

Philllllly sarrrr  - to explain further, a horse can be on the board a lot and not win and accumulate more earnings than one who wins just once.  Thus Smarty's leading earners.

I wouldn't mind a horse that hit the board all the time in my partnership. LOL  And I would love to have a Peace Rules baby.  He was special.

What about Read The Footnotes... was that win by Cribnote not impressive at Saratoga enough?

Ted 01 Aug 2008 9:05 PM

Ted - Cribnote's win was certainly impressive and we invite discussion on any and all maidens (in fact, there were comments about Cribnote's win). But, I am not adding any stallions to the list at this point. By the way, Cribnote's debut was one of the races featured on the blog.

If you want to follow all of the offspring of Read the Footnotes and comment on them, that would be great. Same goes for anyone else for any other first-year stallion.
