Min d'Oro Looking for More

First, I want to apologize for not previewing Mullins Beach's (Speightstown) August 2 race. For some reason, I did not receive advanced email notification. Luckily, I did receive race day notification, so I was able to catch the race. The result is below. I also did not get notification of L. A. Rules' (Peace Rules) entry at Woodbine on August 2. But, he was a scratch.

It's Min d'Oro's Day in Splendor

This one was eventful even before they got in the gate. First, Breezing By was a late scratch. Then, Really Wonder, who had already gotten a rider change, dumped her rider and took off. She headed back to the barn, so was scratched as well. Plus, Min d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) did not want to load and the gate crew had to spend several minutes persuading her. However, last in was first out, as Min d'Oro took right to the lead at the break. She was closely attended by favorite, It's a Frances Day, but soon shook free of that one. In the end, Min d'Oro increased her lead while under a snug hold to break her maiden with ease. It's always nice to start out a day of racing with a win.

Karma over the Beach

Mullins Beach (Speightstown) was off well and in mid-pack in the early going. Up front, Essence of Silver went to the lead, but was closely pursued by C Karma. C Karma continued to pressure and finally went by in the stretch, without much urging. Essence of Silver tried hard, but couldn't keep up. Meanwhile, Mullins Beach was closing nicely to finish third in her debut.

Little Drama Here

The field was reduced to 6 with the scratch of Sligovian Bay and the late scratch of Safety Squeeze. Big Drama went right to the lead out of the gate and was never threatened, as he won by more than 7. Stamen and My Daddio were 2nd and 3rd respectively the whole way, in this merry-go-round contest. Birdcaper (Birdstone) was bumped at the start, but seemed to recover ok. However, he didn't make up any ground and ended up 5th.

War Lap Breaks With Tradition

Conflicting Report was reluctant to load, but was the first one out, with Sky Taps keeping him company and Takamosa close behind. Conflicting Report shook off all of those, but he couldn't hold off War Lap who rallied wide to get up by a nose. Breakwithtradition (Birdstone) broke slowly, but secured a good spot on the rail. However, he didn't gain much and finished 9th. War Lap seems to have a lot better kick on the turf than he did on the dirt.

It's Innovative to Speak Low for the Saar Treaty

Innovative went right to the lead and was never really challenged, as she drew off for an easy win. However, several horses closed well including second place finisher, Speak Low, and Saar Treaty (Saarland) who was shuffled back early, but rallied to take fourth. It definitely looks like Saar Treaty has a future on the turf.

Saxxy Rose Hits the Cha Ching Jackpot

Longshot Saxxy Rose Lee went to the lead along with Illegal Search. Those two were soon joined by Cha Ching Jackpot who looked like she would go on by. However, Saxxy Rose Lee prevailed by a neck. Verdant (Pleasantly Perfect) stumbled at the start, but found a clear spot behind the first pack. She made up some good ground late on the outside, but couldn't catch the leaders. She definitely ran like a horse who would appreciate more distance.

Believe in Gold Aly

At the break, Azooz came out slowly and then ducked in severely to remove himself from contention. Launch the Bull went to the lead, stalked by Gato Go Win. Those two set some ambitious fractions which seemed to set it up for a closer. And, close they did. Believe in Hope got the jump, and took the lead in the stretch. At that point, Gold Aly (Medaglia d'Oro) was still 8th. He came running, but was spun way wide and could get no closer than a length behind Believe in Hope. Following a similar path was Fiery Rebel, who rallied for third. The top three all look colts with good futures. I am really looking forward to seeing Gold Aly stretch out. Unfortunately, Crazy Crash will not get a chance to go forward, as he broke down in the stretch.

There's No Whoa in Big Daddy

Big Daddy Boy went right to the lead at the break and that was pretty much the end of the story, as he drew off to win by 6. Whoa Wham pursued throughout, but couldn't catch Big Daddy. Anasheed Class closed well wide to pick up the show spot. Penching Pennies (Peace Rules) was off slow and then shuffled back even further. We'll see if he gets more gate work after this one.
