That Bird Finds Peace in Paradise with the Playgirl

Not a bad day for Maiden Watch on Monday, August 4 with 3 straight wins. That streak was broken by Dance the Cha Cha's antics at Thistledown. Precious Beans was scratched out of his race, a race which ended in a dead heat between Skipadate and Ninth Client.

Mine That Bird Gets the Trip

Wise Honor and Trip Permit battled on the lead in the early going. Mine That Bird (Birdstone) broke well and secured a good spot on the rail in third. There was a moment of doubt whether he would find a way through, but, the jockey swung him outside and he wore down the leaders to win going away.

Mostly Peace That's Why

Mostly Peace (Peace Rules), who went off at 1-2, broke on top, but Rymac passed her to take the early lead. However, Mostly Peace stayed close to that one. On the turn, Mostly Peace ranged alongside Rymac, whose jockey was going to the whip. Mostly Peace pulled away at the end, while Why O My closed well for 2nd.

Cha Cha Dances Off the Course

Dance the Cha Cha went to the lead and I thought we were going to have a perfect day of four winners. But, Dance the Cha Cha bolted on the turn, lost his rider, jumped the rail and left the course. Andy O inherited the lead and drew off in the stretch with Do It Faster and He's a Saint following in 2nd and 3rd. Chard was eased after being carried out by Dance the Cha Cha.

Trifecta King (Peace Rules - Mamita by Unbridled) returns in the Sorrento Stakes, having not started since her victory in the Cinderella Stakes on May 25. Since about 2 weeks after that race, she has been working regularly, first at Hollywood Park and then at Del Mar. Trifecta King sold for $10,000 as a yearling and $45,000 as a 2-year old. Her dam is a half-sister to Church Service who won the Dallas Turf Cup on May 26.

Favoritism in the Sorrento will probably go to Emmy Darling, who won the Landaluce Stakes in her last start on June 28. Also returning from that race are Glitter City, who was 2nd in the Landaluce, Cosmic Queen, who was 3rd and who defeated Trifecta King in their debuts on May 15, and Malusita who was 7th. Glitter City broke her maiden on June 15, where she defeated Emmy Darling.

Upper Manhattan finished 3rd in the Cinderella, behind Trifecta King, and most recently finished 2nd at Del Mar, in a Starter race on July 23.

Another familiar face to Maiden Watch regulars is Evita Argentina who broke her broke her maiden impressively on June 25.

Other horses coming off maiden victories are Amina and Dash Dot Dash.

The field is completed by maidens Stardom Bound, who finished 2nd in her only start on July 20, and Silar Rules who has run 3 times, finishing 4th twice and 5th in the California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association.
