Much at Stake

Four Maiden Watch horses try stakes company this Saturday, Mine That Bird (Birdstone) and Oconee (Congaree) in the Silver Deputy at Woodbine, Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) in the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth, and Long Live Dixie (Peace Rules) in the Miss Shenandoah Stakes at Charles Town. Also results for Longandstrong (Birdstone) and Prolific (Medaglia d'Oro) and entries for Peace Reigns (Peace Rules) and One Perfect Karat (Pleasantly Perfect).

Only one result, as Steel Lucky (Congaree) was scratched from her race. That one was won by Hot Pistol.

Midtown Strong and Prolific

Smokey Fella went for the early lead, pursued by Midtown Bailey. Midtown Bailey took over in the stretch and drew clear. Our two did not have the cleanest starts, Longandstrong (Birdstone) was off slow and Prolific (Medaglia d'Oro) was bumped at the start. However, Longandstrong started moving up and made a big move wide on the turn. He did flatten out late, but had enough steam to claim second spot from Smokey Fella. Prolific ran fairly evenly after his bump, but did finish 4th.

Mine That Bird (Birdstone – Mining My Own by Smart Strike) and Oconee (Congaree – Chenoa by Wild Again) meet for the second time in the Silver Deputy Stakes at Woodbine. Their previous meeting, on July 20, resulted in a victory for Oconee. Since that race, Mine That Bird earned his initial win at Woobine on August 4. Although this was a Maiden Claiming race, Mine That Bird displayed a professionalism that should serve him well. Oconee's dam was unraced, but she is a half-sister to four graded performers including Demaloot Demashoot who earned $574,825 and won or placed in 8 graded stakes. He also won 2 races as a 2-year old and finished 3rd in the Iroquois (gr. III) that same year. Congaree has produced two stakes winners, Congo Kaye and Zigaree, as well as stakes-placed For All Who Conga. Mine That Bird is the first foal out of the unraced mare, Mining My Own, who is a half-sister to 5 winners, including stakes winner Golden Sunray. Three of Mining My Own's siblings won at 2. Birdstone has not had any stakes winners as yet, nor any repeat winners.

Other faces familiar to Maiden Watch include Tashi (Im Millennium Man - Zeta Love by Cherokee Fellow), who broke his maiden on July 18. Interestingly, 3rd in that race was Quebec City who broke his maiden in his next start on August 16. Tashi had previously finished 5th on June 22 and 7th on April 19. Tashi is the only winner for his sire, Im Millennium Man, who has just 3 named foals of racing age.

All three of War Lap's (War Chant - Indy Five Hundred by A. P. Indy) starts have been covered by Maiden Watch. He finished 3rd twice at Churchill Downs, on May 21 and June 14, before breaking through on the Woodbine turf on August 2. I thought he appeared to have a much better kick on the turf than on the dirt, but this will be his first try on the Polytrack.

The leading earner in the race is Dryden (Double Honor - Suave Lady by Line In The Sand) who finished 2nd in the Colin Stakes on July 19, after previously breaking his maiden on June 22. Both of his races were on the Woodbine Polytrack.

Encroachment (Snuck In - Illusive Partner by Regal Search) was a winner in his only start, a Maiden Claiming race on the Woodbine Polytrack on July 17.

Americas Dreaming (Statue of Liberty - Barnabas (ITY) by Slip Anchor (GB) makes her U.S. debut in the Junior Champion Stakes, after entering in scratching from several races at Saratoga which came off the turf. Americas Dreaming ran once in Ireland, finishing 2nd on April 19.

Lady Kafca (Kafwain - Southern Wildcat by Forest Wildcat) has run three times without winning. However, she did finish 2nd at a mile on the turf in her most recent effort at Delaware Park on August 5.

News and Notes

Guadalcanal finished fifth in his allowance race at Saratoga, August 22 (almost said, his first try against winners, ooops forgot the Belmont). He had a bit of traffic trouble, but no real excuses.
