Be Smart Wood Triumph

Be Smart Lights Up the Tote Board

Be Smart (Smarty Jones) went right to the lead, set nice fractions and kept right on going. She did seem to tire a bit in the stretch, but there was no one near enough to make her sweat too much. The favorite Justwhistledixie chased, but could not catch Be Smart. Mia's First closed wide and a bit erratically to pick up the place spot late. When I watched this race live, the sound was off and it was a bit surreal to realize that was Be Smart setting the pace. Be Smart was the only filly in the field not on lasix. She's a nice looking chestnut, with a bit of a blaze.

We all would have Been Smart to have bet a bundle on Be Smart. Not only did she pay $100 for the win, but the $2 exacta paid $1,241 and trifecta was $4,127 (with the favorite in third).

Violet Wood Get the Win

Just 15 minutes after Be Smart took the ninth at Saratoga, Maiden Watch was involved in another unbelievable race. This time it wasn't the odds of the winner that was impressive, as the favorite took the race, but the margin of victory and the way it was achieved. The early pace battlers were Tonia Baby, Goldwrapinsilver, and Yoyo. Wood Violet (Congaree) was stalking. She seemed to have plenty of energy, but lacked a way through. Finally, she saw daylight and swept to the lead. But, no time to rejoice, 40-1 Northeast Harbor was closing like a freight train. At the finish, it was too close to call. They looked at the photo a very long time, which often indicates a dead heat, but in the end it was Wood Violet who made the trip to the Winner's Circle.

Megalicious Overtakes the Field

There was a mad scramble for the lead, as Southern Oaks, Distant Storm, Glacken Queen, and So Probable were all doing battle. Glacken Queen won the battle, but she lost the war as her stablemate, Megalicious, came rolling on the outside to go by. Belle Jour (Smarty Jones) was off slow and then ran extremely greenly in the stretch, trying to duck out (my notes said, "green, green, green"). I'm not sure that the addition of blinkers was a good thing for this one. I certainly cannot comment on her ability, since she wouldn't run straight.

Scientist Solves Saratoga (Steve)

As predicted, Saratoga stayed dry and MTO Haynesfield (Speightstown) did not start. But, don't despair, as he is entered again on August 29 (see below). J T Moore and Coronation Day battled early, taking turns leading. Coronation Day took over, but could not stop the closing rush of Scientist, who had been stalking the early pace. Saratoga Steve closed well to pick up the place spot, but did not threaten the winner.
