And Then There were 19

  • Comments

Today, August 31, there are 19 Maiden Watch horses running in 14 races. I can't possible preview all of those races. So, I decided to profile the races at Saratoga (3 of them) and Del Mar (1), plus touch on the two stakes races that feature Maiden Watch horses (Spinaway and Sapling). I will also list the other horses running and will try to recap all the races.

Min d'Oro was scratched from her race on August 30, so she will have to wait another day to win her maiden again. The winner in that one was heavy favorite Naturally Naughty.

Forty Thieves Steals Away from a Clash of Arms

Doc's Friend and Clash of Arms (Speightstown) were on the pace early, with Forty Thieves lurking on the outside. That one soon took control and drew off impressively to win by more than 7. Doc's Friend hung around for 3, while Clash of Arms tired to 5th. Shine My Shoes had a nice late bid to take third.

Stonecoldfreak Lasts Over Federal Hill

Stonecoldfreak held the early lead, but he was pressured by Be a Pal, Australis Wood, and Shoe Strap (Birdstone). Be a Pal and Australis Wood faded, while Shoe Strap ran evenly in fourth. Meanwhile, up front, Federal Hill was closing fast but green. Stonecoldfreak had just enough left to hold off Federal Hill.

Western Fable Doesn't Linger

Saarlandisourland (Saarland) did not draw in off the AE list. Western Fable took the lead out of the gate with Triste Doble Q chasing and they pretty much remained that way throughout. Benton Drive and Dear Cat both closed well to pick up 3rd and 4th. Don't You Linger was in a good position and put in a strong drive, but couldn't sustain it and faded to fifth. Still, it was a decent debut.

Ectonia Holds Off Sue, Joy

Purse set the early pace, but she was joined by Ectonia. That one took over, as Purse faded. Sue's Update (Medaglia d'Oro) came rolling on the outside, a little bit green. At the same time, Joy Street, was also closing. Ectonia, Sue's Update, and Joy Street hit the line together, but Ectonia held on. Sue's Update, who was also fractious in the gate, just needs to get a little more focused and she won't be a maiden much longer.

Fourstarattraction Hits the Birdseye

Toxaway (Congaree) set the early pace, but he was finished after a half. Laguna Amiga took over after that, but she couldn't hold off Fourstarattraction. Birdseye (Birdstone) ran a nice race, maybe a little one-paced, but she did pick up the show spot which meant she finished in front of nine horses. She certainly looked at home on the turf and I hope she stays there. Himynameissarah (Saarland) didn't make much of an impact.

Collegiate Hopes to Spin a Grade I

Collegiate (Saarland - La Sorbonne (ARG) by Southern Halo) returns to stakes company after a decent fourth in the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) on July 23. Since that race, she has been working regularly at Saratoga. She takes on a familar cast of characters, headed by Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) winner Mani Bhavan and Schuylerville winner Jardin. Also returning from the Schuylerville is Girlfrienontheside who finished 3rd, after previously finishing 2nd in the Astoria Stakes. Mine All Mine is an interesting prospect. Although it took her 4 tries to break her maiden, she finished 6th in the Kentucky Stakes and 2nd behind the promising colt Theregoesjojo, before romping when back in against the girls.

Dueling Alex (Medaglia d'Oro - Rosie Dooley by Trempolino) returns to stakes action after a nightmare trip in the Saratoga Special on August 14. He has not had a work since that race. Officer Ipod, who finished 2nd in the Sanford (gr. II) after setting the pace, will probably be favored here. None of the other entries have stakes experience, but all of these are coming off impressive maiden victories. It would not be surprising to see one of these jump up to a stakes win. One name that caught my eye was Silent Valor, who defeated Rapid Redux (Pleasantly Perfect) in that horse's debut. However, that was back in May.

Honest Deceiver is a full-sister to grade I stakes winner and millionaire, Yes It's True. As a 2-year old, Yes It's True was a debut winner and won or placed in 7 stakes including wins in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes (gr. III) and the Sapling (gr. III). Speightstown's 24 runners have made 34 total starts, recording 5 wins, 7 seconds, 8 thirds, and $340,204.

Finishing 6th in his only race, a 6 furlong Maiden Special Weight at Saratoga on August 6, was They're Late (Mineshaft - Whitewater by Forestry). They're Late, who sold for $190,000 as a yearling, is the 2nd foal out of an unraced mare.

The only other entrant with experience is Tufao (Holy Bull - Tipperary Melody by Rahy), who was 10th in his only start, on August 25 at Saratoga. That quick turnaround may indicate that he didn't expand much energy first time out. Tufao sold for $65,000 as a yearling and $460,000 as a 2-year old. Tipperary Melody, the dam of Tufao, finished 2nd in the Sorority Stakes (gr. III) at 2. As a broodmare, Tipperary Melody has produced 2 winners.

Bringing $600,000 as a yearling was Majhood (Awesome Again - Beyond Venus by War Chant), who is the first foal out of an unraced mare who is a half-sister to 4 winners, including grade II stakes winner, Saudi Poetry.

Ducane (Johannesburg - Piedras Negras by Unbridled) is a full-brother to grade III stakes winner La Traviata who earned $129,248 in her career.

River Fancy, who sold for $90,000 as a weanling, is out of the mare Go Baby Go who was stakes-placed on the turf. Go Baby Go has produced 2 winners from 2 to run, including Hugo who was stakes-placed on the turf at 2. Classofsixtythree is out of a turf winning dam who has produced 3 winners.

The only other runner with turf experience is the Irish filly Americas Dreaming (Statue of Liberty - Barnabas (ITY) by Slip Anchor (GB)), who has been trying to make her North American debut for some time now. Last weekend, she was entered in the Junior Champion Stakes, but that one came off the turf as well. Americas Dreaming's only start came on the yielding turf in Ireland, where she finished 2nd on April 19. Americas Dreaming is a half-sister to 2 turf winners, including stakes-placed Mighty Empire.

Debbie H (More Than Ready - Plucky Broad by Holy Bull), who sold for $85,000 as a yearling, finished 2nd in her only start, in the slop at Saratoga on August 11. Plucky Broad, dam of Debbie H, was a winner of $125,574. She has produced one winner from two to run. That offspring won at 2.

Theatrical Madam (Theatrical (IRE) - Madam Rochas by Roar) is the 2nd foal out of a winning mare who was placed on the turf.

It's My Day (Grand Slam - Dying Burns by Deputy Minister) is the 3rd foal out of a mare, who is half-sister to grade I winners Queens Court Queen and Mr. Purple. Both of these won stakes on the dirt and the turf.
