Min d'Oro, Still a Maiden?

Arabian Lady Takes Honors Over Pretty Kitten

Arabian Lady went right to the lead, closely followed by Honor Kris. Arabian Lady continued to lead and won fairly easily, but there was a mad dash for the minor awards. Pretty Kitten (Saarland) was off slow and trailed the field for much of the race. In the stretch, she closed well on the rail to just get up for the show spot (although since they don't pay show prices, is it still the show spot?)

It was a Close Encounter for Haynesfield

Smokin Hero grabbed the early lead, but was pressed by Close Encounter. Smokin Hero gained a bit of daylight in the stretch, but Close Encounter kept coming and coming and went by in the end. Haynesfield (Speightstown) chased the pace, securing third. He was no threat to the top 2, but was well clear of the rest of the pack. Not a flashy beginning, but solid enough.

I almost to forgot to recount the most amusing part of this race. In fact, I did forget about it and had to go back and add it. Clever Martini was a late scratch after acting up. Tom Durkin was explaining the various refunds for bets and such, when the horses broke from the gate. He said, "and they're off and have been for an eighth of a mile." First time that I recall Durkin missing the break. It shows how quickly New York regroups after a late scratch.

10. Mary's Follies

I had a sense of deja vu as I received an entry notice for Min d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Min Elreeh by Danzig) in a Maiden Special Weight race, or maybe a sense of surealism. Wait, didn't Min d'Oro already break her maiden? Am I confusing her with another horse? Was it Mario d'Oro or Mr. d'Oro that I was thinking of? No, here it was, she won the fifth race at Suffolk on August 2. Or, I should more accurately say that she finished in front. Further investigation revealed that Min d'Oro was disqualified from that win, and placed 6th. I do not know why she was disqualified at this time. If anyone knows more about this situation, please chime in. I did find it interesting that the brisnet past performances said, "beaten by weaker in only start." That isn't exactly accurate, since she finished in front of them all. Anyway, one would think Min d'Oro would have the advantage here since she has already finished in front, even though this is a step up to a tougher circuit. She has had 2 works at Aqueduct since her start. Min d'Oro is a half-sister to 5 winners, 3 of which won at 2. These include stakes winner Allodial Land, who earned $423,792 in his career. Medaglia d'Oro's 27 runners have made 55 total starts, recording 11 wins, 6 seconds, and 8 thirds, and $386,536.

Finishing 3rd in her only start at Monmouth on August 6 was Intuition (During - Miss Maggie by Afleet), who sold for $115,000 as a yearling. Intuition is by first-crop sire During whose 17 runners have made 28 total starts, recording 4 wins, 2 seconds, 6 thirds, and $97,607. Miss Maggie, dam of Intuition, was a 2-year old winner and finished 3rd in the Prioress Stakes (gr. II) at 3. She has produced 2 winners.

Selling for $130,000 as a yearling was Naturally Naughty (Holy Bull - Bad Pussycat by Distinctive Pro), who finished 5th in her only start at Saratoga on August 7. Naturally Naughty is out of a 2-year old winning mare who has produced 4 winners, including stakes winner Bam Bam Bull a full-sister to Naturally Naughty.

The remaining entrants are making their debuts, including 2 by first-year stallions, Tic Toccet (Toccet - Adrenalin Running by A. P. Indy) by Toccet and Spanish Ambassador (Spanish Steps - Do I Make Ya Randi by Crown Ambassador) by Spanish Steps. Tic Toccet, who sold for $50,000 as a weanling, is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 2 winners, including stakes winner Strike Rate. Spanish Steps' 12 runners have made 26 collective starts, registering 2 wins, 4 seconds, and $66,011. A field of 10, plus 2 AEs and 4 MTOs awaits the debut of Don't You Linger (Congaree - So Long Dearie by D'Accord). It looks fairly dry at Saratoga today, so I think I'll skip the MTOs. However, the AEs include our own filly, Saarlandisourland (Saarland - Crypto Kate by Tabasco Cat), so I will include the AEs. Don't You Linger is a half-brother to turf stakes winner Them There Eyes, who has earned $270,267 through 2008, and stakes-placed My Dinah who has won on the turf. Congaree's 24 runners have made 42 total starts, recording 9 wins, 7 seconds, 3 thirds, and $319,011.
