Labor Day of Stakes

  • Comments

Munnings, Medaglia d'Onore, Trifecta King, and Retraceable take to the stakes for Labor Day. Of course, stakes are old hat for Trifecta King, who broke her maiden in the Cinderella and last ran in the Sorrento Stakes (gr. III) and Medaglia d'Onore, who has also faced stakes competition twice, but Munnings and Retraceable will be making their stakes debuts. I find it interesting that Munnings and Retraceable, who broke their maidens impressively on the same day, try stakes company for the first time on the same day. It will be interesting to compare their performances. It may not be fair to compare a grade I at Saratoga with a stakes restricted to Canadian breds at Woodbine, but that won't stop the comparison.

Munnings and Medaglia d'Onore Hopeful For Stakes Success

September 1, 2008
Saratoga Race 10
Hopeful Stakes (gr. I)

7 furlongs
2 Year Olds
Post Time: 5:56 PM HRTV/TVG

P Horse
1. Break Water Edison
2. Desert Party
3. Cognito
4. Munnings
5. Vineyard Haven
6. Medaglia d'Onore
7. Notonthesamepage
8. Cribnote

The stakes veterans in this one include undefeated Desert Party (Street Cry (IRE) - Sage Cat by Tabasco Cat), who last time out took the Sanford Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga, Break Water Edison (Lemon Drop Kid - August Storm by Storm Creek), 2nd in the Saratoga Special (gr. II) in his most recent start, Vineyard Haven (Lide Palace (CHI) - Princess Aloha by Aloha Prospector), 3rd in the Sanford, and Notonthesamepage (Catienus - Blue Holiday by Cure the Blues), who finished 2nd in the Tyro Stakes as the heavy favorite. The final one with stakes experience is Medaglia d'Onore (Medaglia d'Oro - Always Ready by Dixieland Band) who finished 5th in the Bashford Manor (gr. III) and 6th in the Saratoga Special. In both of those races, he came running at the end, but had too much to do. He will probably go off at big odds, and most certainly be moving at the end, but will need luck to hit the board.

The field is completed by impressive Saratoga maiden winners, Munnings (Speightstown - La Comete by Holy Bull), Cribnote (Read the Footnotes - Totebook by Notebook), and Cognito (Langfuhr - Coral Sea by Rubiano). Munnings won his debut on July 26 by 4 easy lengths and quickly became the talk of Saratoga. Some of the gleam was taken off this win when Just a Coicidence, who finished 2nd behind Munnings, failed as the favorite on August 31. Interestingly, he was defeated by In Speight of It who previously had finished behind Cognito. Munnings claim to most impressive maiden winner at Saratoga only lasted one day, as Cribnote scored by 13 lengths on July 27 in his second start. In his first start, he had horrible traffic problems but still kept running. There is one caveat regarding Cribnote's win, it was against New York-breds. Does that make a difference? We should find out on the track. Cognito's maiden score was not as visually impressive as the other two, as he had to work harder for the victory which came in his second start on July 23. However, three of the runners who finished behind Cognito have since won. Two of the those who were behind Cribnote have also broken their maidens. On the other hand, Munnings race has produced no other winners.

Trifecta King Tries to be a Debutante

Del Mar Race 9
Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I)

7 furlong
2 Year Old Fillies
Post Time: 9:00 PM TVG

P Horse
1. Palacio de Amor
2. Will O Way
3. Evita Argentina
4. Stardom Bound
5. Saucey Evening
6. Candilejas
7. Trifecta King
8. Glitter City
9. Montana Fields
10. Turtle Creek Babe
11. Emmy Darling
12. Empressive Lady

Evita Argentina (Candy Ride (ARG) - Jealous Wildcat by Forest Wildcat) won the Sorrento (gr. III), but she hasn't scared anyone off in the Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) where she faces a full field of 12. In fact, she isn't even the morning line choice. Also returning from the Sorrento are maiden Stardom Bound (Tapit - My White Corvette by Tarr Road), who was 2nd after a slow start (her second straight slow), Glitter City (City Place - Bon Caro by Bon Point (GB)), who finished 3rd, but was disqualified and placed 4th, Emmy Darling (Graeme Hall - Dance Delight by Colonial Affair) who finished 4th, but was placed 3rd after the dq of Glitter City, and Cinderella winner Trifecta King (Peace Rules - Mamita by Unbridled) who had to check hard while up on the pace and ended up last. Emmy Darling and Glitter City had previously finished 1-2 in the Landaluce Stakes.

The only other entrant with stakes experience is Saucey Evening (More Than Ready - Jeweled Lady by General Meeting), who finished 2nd in the California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes on July 18, a stakes restricted to horses bred in California.

The rest of the field is coming into the race after a maiden win. Many of these also have experience with others in the field. Turtle Creek Babe (Grand Slam - Cyclorama by Theatrical (IRE)) defeated Stardom Bound and Montana Fields (Pulpit - Exceptionally by El Prado (IRE)) in her initial victory. Palacio De Amor (Dixieland Band - Haitian Vacation by Petionville) finished 4th behind Montana Fields in that one's maiden score. Candilejas (Candy Ride (ARG) - Delicias Blues by Grindstone) was defeated by Evita Argentina in her first start before breaking her maiden two races later. And, Empressive Lady (Empire Maker - Racey Player by A. P. Indy) finished 7th behind Glitter City and Emmy Darling in her first start, before an impressive maiden win last time out.

The newcomer to the California scene is Will O Way (Broken Vow - Willow Woodman by Woodman), who broke her maiden at Calder in her only start on July 27. She has had several works at Del Mar since that victory.

Retraceable Takes On the Muskoka

September 1, 2008
Woodbine Race 4
Muskoka Stakes
7 furlongs
2 Year Old Fillies
Post Time: 2:32 PM

P Horse
1. Cafe Au Mey
2. Deeveetee
3. Cataleenda
4. Van Lear Rose
5. Wild Indiscretion
6. Retraceable
7. Astrotime
8. Dancing Charm

Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro - Embraceable by Dehere) tries stakes company after a professional maiden win in her first try on July 26. Only one horse who finished behind Retraceable, Georgia Song, has since won. However, both Georgia Song and another runner, Panther Strike are stakes-placed since being defeated by Retraceable. What really impressed me with Retraceable's win was her professionalism as she picked off horses.

Only two horses in the Muskoka have previous stakes experience. Cataleenda (D'wildcat - Suchathing by Fortunate Prospect) finished 3rd in the Nandi Stakes at Woodbine on August 3, and maiden Van Lear Rose (Stroll - Devaluation by Conquistador Cielo) finished 3rd (placed 2nd through disqualification) in the Shady Well Stakes at Woodbine on July 13. Since that race, Van Lear Rose finished 2nd in a maiden race on August 9. Finishing 4th in that race was Cafe Au Mey (Kafwain - Castle Mey by With Approval), another of the maidens in the Muskoka. Cafe Au Mey had previously finished 3rd behind Astrotime (Gilded Time - Astro Beauty by Bold Laddie) in that one's maiden score.

The other maidens in the race are Deeveetee (Doneraile Court - Diamonds To Me by Belong to Me), who was 2nd in her only start on August 14 at Woodbine and Dancing Charm (Dance To Destiny - Beau's Charm by Beau Genius), who is a veteran of 3 races. Dancing Charm has twice finished behind Cataleenda and most recently finished 5th at Woodbine on July 26.

The remaining entrant is Wild Indiscretion (Tomahawk - Wild Attraction by Wild Rush) who, like Retraceable, was a winner in her only start. In Wild Indiscretion's case, this start took place at Woodbine on August 8.
