Vineyard Haven Sails, Cribnote and Munnings Without Hope

Vineyard Haven was impressive, taking the lead out of the gate and pulling away in the stretch, but the race was more memorable for what might have been. First, Munnings (Speightstown) stumbled out of the gate, spotting the field many lengths. He did make a good move in the stretch, but his early activities took something out of him and he was no match for Vineyard Haven. Then, Cribnote, went almost to the outside rail on the turn. To his credit, he did keep running, but he was unable to catch the winner. Cribnote obviously has a lot of talent, but something seems to be amiss either physical or mental. Personally, I was also disappointed with Medaglia d'Onore (Medaglia d'Onore). Not that I was expecting a win or even a placing, but I was expected some run at the end, which he didn't give.

Stardom is Bound for the Debutante Winner

Longshot Palacio de Amor took the early lead, with Glitter City, Empressive Lady, and Candilejas hanging about. Meanwhile, Stardom Bound came out of the gate slowly, as is her custom. She lingered at the back for much of the race, but then came rolling on the outside. It was no contest, as she broke her maiden in style. Palacio de Amor held on well to take second, while Will O Way closed for third. Trifecta King (Peace Rules) pretty much ran the same race that she did in the Sorrento, without the checking. She showed early speed and then faded, beating only Turtle Creek Babe who was pulled up. Trifecta King may need to return to sprinting, or maybe a change of race tactics.

Van Lear Rose Holds Off Retraceable

Van Lear Rose took the early lead, but she had plenty of company in Deeveetee, who briefly took the lead, Wild Indiscretion, and Cataleenda. Meanwhile, Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro) was in the back, battling some traffic issues (she had to steady several times). Swung to the outside, I thought that she would go right by her rivals, but Van Lear Rose held on. Astrotime, who broke in the air, ran a nice race to pick up third.

A Slow Start Strikes Jak; Sugah Goes Dancin

This one was over early for Strike Jak (Peace Rules), as she hesitated at the start. Honestly, I thought she did well to pass one horse, and to catch the tail end of the rest of the field. Sugah Dancin, on the other hand, got a great start and drew off to the win, despite drifting out in the stretch. Phat Dream ducked in at that start, but recovered to be the best of the rest.

Classy Gentleman Skips by the Stone

Stone Skipper (Birdstone) came out well and took a brief lead. He soon yielded the lead to Wells Park, but stuck close. Classy Gentleman came along and went by both of them. Wells Park gave way, but Stone Skipper was stubborn. Classy Gentleman finally pulled clear, but Stone Skipper was not disgraced (have to love the chart note, grudgingly). Favorite Lang Heart could do no better than third.

Signet Ring (Medaglia d'Oro - Runaway Royalty by Runaway Groom) debuts, and Despeightitall (Speightstown - Deputy Royal by Deputy Minister) makes his 2nd start, as Turfway Park opens for racing.

Signet Ring is a half-brother to 6 winners, including Air Rocket who won or placed in 6 stakes and earned $406,328. Air Rocket was also a debut winner at 2 and was stakes-placed that same year. Medaglia d'Oro is the sire of 28 runners who have made 61 total starts, registering 11 wins, 8 seconds, 8 thirds, and $428,113.

Despeightitall finished 8th first time out at Ellis Park, after breaking slowly on August 3. With Tracy Hebert aboard this time, I can almost guarantee that he'll be out of the gate a bit quicker. Since that start, he has worked twice at Churchill Downs. Despeightitall is a half-brother to 4 winners, including stakes winner Royal Saint. Speightstown's 25 runners have made 41 total starts, recording 7 wins, 9 seconds, 9 thirds, and $456,968.

Shofar (Tale of the Cat - Valkyries' Ride by Dixieland Band) has run once, finishing 6th way back on April 18 at Keeneland. That has turned out to be a fairly productive race, as it featured future stakes winners Run Away and Hide (Saratoga Special, Kentucky Stakes), Screen Your Friend (Bashford Manor) and Silent Valor (Sapling). In addition, three other horses from that race have gone on to break their maidens. Shofar, who sold for $40,000 as a yearling, is the first foal out of a mare who is a half-sister to 3 winners, including stakes winner Grand Deed. Grand Deed won the Bassinet Stakes and the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at 2.

Sir Bubba (Five Star Day - Shiroyama by Seattle Slew), who sold for $18,000 as a yearling, has run twice, finishing 4th at Presque Isle Downs on August 23 and 3rd at Ellis Park on August 3. He is a half-brother to 4 winners.

Also a veteran of 2 races is Piner Mountain (Monashee Mountain - Gradalupe by Irish River (FR)), who finished 9th on June 15 and 4th on May 24, both races at Churchill Downs. Piner Mountain is the first foal out of an unraced mare who is half-sister to one winner.

The final entrant with experience is Mister Jo Jangles (Johannesburg - Prospective Wife by Mr. Prospector), who was 9th in his only start, a 6 furlong contest at Ellis Park on August 16. Mister Jo Jangles is a half-brother to 7 winners, including Politial Wife, a winner at 2 and a stakes winner at 3.

First-crop sire Chapel Royal is the sire of Chapel By the Sea (Chapel Royal - Sea Side Queen by The Name's Jimmy). Chapel Royal's 44 runners have made 105 total starts, recording 12 wins, 13 seconds, 17 thirds, and $378,437. Sea Side Queen, the dam of Chapel By the Sea, was stakes-placed and has produced one winner.

Sundays Baby Grand (Sunday Break (JPN) - Tally Slew by Slew City Slew) is the first foal out of a mare who was a winner at 2, and who is a half-sister to 4 winners, including stakes-placed Call Roy.

Di's Time, the dam of Di's Dr Schumocker (Dixie Union - Di's Time by Gilded Time) was a stakes winner who earned $241,793. She has produced 2 stakes-placed horses, including Lenaro who was a debut winner at 2 and finished 3rd in the Debutante (gr. III) that same year.

Dookie Duck (Bright Launch - Meet With Pete by Anticipating) is out of a winning mare who has produced 5 winners, including stakes-placed Doc's Lil' Angel.

Mama's Pro, dam of Real Thunder (Thunder Gulch - Mama's Pro by Proper Reality) won or placed in 13 stakes, including the Pontalba Stakes at 2. In her career, she earned $435,802 in 32 races. Mama's Pro has produced 3 winners from 4 to run, including stakes winner Pro Prado. Pro Prado, who earned $397,514, won his first 2 starts at 2.

New and Notes

Night Action (Action This Day - Saint Aubin by Saint Ballado) went gate-to-wire in the Cradle Stakes to become the first stakes winner for his sire on September 1. And who was that just missing third? Our old friend, Just Like Biscuit who was fresh off his maiden win on August 24. He made a big move in the stretch and looked as though he would really have some impact, but couldn't sustain it.

Closing day feature at Del Mar is the Del Mar Futurity featuring Kelly Leak, who finished first in the Best Pal, but disqualified to 4th. Others of interest include Southern Exchange, who was last seen winning the Colin Stakes at Woodbine and impressive maiden winner Midshipman.

2-Year Old Works

As I said on Sunday, August 31, I am going to begin only noting works of horses new to this blog. However, I will comment on horses' works when they are entered in a race. One exception is Curly, whose works I will still note. He's kind of outside the normal focus of the blog anyway, since he's neither a maiden nor a 2-year old.
