A Ghost in the Jungle Too Much for Prolific
Master Mariner took the early early lead, but was rank. Also up on the early pace were Jungleland and Ghost Five. Master Mariner fell back after a half, and Ghost Five hit the front. Jungleland stuck with him for awhile, but then Ghost Five drew off to win by more than 6. Prolific (Medaglia d'Oro) settled off the pace and came running wide in the stretch, but could do no better than 3rd.

Big Al Overtakes Tranquil Times, The Gang of Four
Sneaking Uponyou and Fleet Ace set the early fractions, but neither was around at the finish. Tranquil Times (Peace Rules) secured a good stalking position and took a brief lead, but he couldn't hold off the closing kick of Big Al Cordes. He did, however, save place over a closing Big Push. The Gang of Four (Medaglia d'Oro) broke inward, made a bit of a move in the stretch, but tired to finish 5th. It's tough to debut on yielding turf, so this was a promising first start for The Gang of Four.

Banker is the Choice Over Verdant
I ventured to Turfway Park for this race, to see Verdant (Pleasantly Perfect) in the flesh. Not much flesh to her, kind of a skinny thing. She certainly does not look like a sprinter, I can definitely see why they wanted to stretch her out. She ran a good race, despite going wide. She would have been third, except she was trying desperately to get out in the stretch. A straight path would have netted the show spot. The race itself was pretty exciting. Chary held the early lead, but tired in the stretch. At that point, heavy favorite Banker's Choice hit the lead, but she was all out to hold off first-timer, Little Nancy. At the wire, there was only a nose separating them. Little Nancy, who was quite a handful in the paddock and in the post parade, showed a lot of tenacity and should be one to watch in the future.
Two races early at Turfway, Ravin Maniac, who was scratched from the Arlington-Washington Lassie on Sept. 6, went off at 1-9 in a 5.5 furlong allowance race. She justified those odds, breaking on top and never looking back to score by more than 7 lengths.

Her sire, The Cliff's Edge is the sire of 26 runners who have made 56 total starts, recording 5 wins, 7 seconds, 7 thirds, and $193,610. Carioca is the first foal out of an unraced mare, who is a half-sister to one winner.
Siren Serenade (Unbridled's Song - Versailles Treaty by Danzig) also finished 5th in her only start, on the sloppy main track at Saratoga on July 24. Siren Serenade is out of grade I stakes winner and millionaire Versailles Treaty, which makes her a half-sister to Saarland. Saarland, who won the Remsen Stakes at 2, earned $595,250 and won or placed in 6 stakes, including a 2nd in the Met Mile (gr. I).
The remaining horses in the main body of the race are making their debuts, including Venatrix (Theatrical (IRE) - Garimpeiro by Mr. Prospector) who sold for $300,000 as a yearling. News and Notes
Another maiden race of note at Belmont on September 10 is the 2nd race, which features the debut of Castanet (El Prado (IRE) - Dancinginmydreams by Seeking the Gold). Dancinginmydreams, the dam of Castanet, was a debut winner at 2, who finished 2nd in the Matron. She is also a full-sister to grade I stakes winners Heavenly Prize and Oh What a Windfall. However, Dancinginmydreams is probably better known for suffering and surviving a multiple-fraction of her right hind leg, which occurred in the 2000 Frizette. Castanet is Dancinginmydreams' 2nd foal to reach the races. Her first foal is Dancing Forever, who earlier this year won the Manhattan Handicap on the Belmont Turf.
