Stone Legacy Shows Courage in War

The race was taken off the turf, so all the MTOs including Stone Legacy (Birdstone) made it into the field. And, Eleni's Hope, Concorde's Dance, Carioca, Freedom Rings, Selene's Delight, Pull Dancer, Outstanding Henny were all scratched. Venatrix stumbled out of the gate, while War Echo (half-sister to Pyro) took the lead from the break. State Treasure and Siren Serenade gave chase, but soon fell back. Stone Legacy came out ok in 4th and moved into 3rd without much effort. She was on the wrong lead while gaining 2nd, but switched over and put distance between herself and the third place horse. She didn't make up any ground on War Echo, who went on to win by more than 4, but it was a very good effort. You have to love the chart notes for Stone Legacy, "underwent a three wide journey and came home with good courage for the place."

Oconee (Congaree – Chenoa by Wild Again) returns after finishing 2nd in the Silver Deputy Stakes (behind Mine That Bird) on August 23. This time, he'll try allowance company and the turf. Since the Silver Deputy, Oconee recorded a bullet work on the Woodbine turf training track on September 5. Oconee's dam was unraced, but she is a half-sister to four graded performers including Demaloot Demashoot who earned $574,825 and won or placed in 8 graded stakes. He also won 2 races as a 2-year old and finished 3rd in the Iroquois (gr. III) that same year.

Also returning from the Silver Deputy are War Lap (War Chant - Indy Five Hundred by A. P. Indy), who was 4th, and Tashi (Im Millennium Man - Zeta Love by Cherokee Fellow), who was 6th. War Lap broke his maiden on the Woodbine turf on August 2, after previously finishing 3rd twice at Churchill Downs. Tashi broke his maiden on the Woodbine Polytrack on July 18, his previous 2 starts were a 5th on the Woodbine Polytrack on June 22, and a 7th on the dirt at Gulfstream Park.

Finishing 3rd in Tashi's maiden win was Quebec City (Even the Score - Perth Lassie by On Target), who broke his maiden next time out at Woodbine on August 16. Quebec City, who has also made 2 starts on the dirt at Churchill, has not run on the turf.

Another entrant familiar to Maiden Watch readers is Bear's Rocket (Lion Heart - Aim for the Moon by Deputy Minister), who broke his maiden on the Woodbine Polytrack on July 6. Since that race, he finished 3rd in the Colin Stakes also at Woodbine. Like many in the field, Bear's Rocket has no turf experience.

Star of David (Bernstein - Sweetest Smile by Dehere) also ran in the Colin Stakes, finishing 6th. He previously broke his maiden on the Churchill Downs dirt at 5 furlongs on June 25.

Balm Beach (Trajectory - Gilded Nip by Gilded Time) finished 8th twice at Woodbine, before breaking his maiden at Fort Erie on July 20 on a sloppy race track.

One of the few with turf experience is Utterly Cool (Smoke Glacken - Destroy by Housebuster), who broke his maiden in his only start on the turf at Woodbine on August 17.

Attractive Ride (Candy Ride (ARG) - Valid Attraction by Valid Appeal) was also a winner in his only start, but he ran on the Polytrack at Arlington Park in a Maiden Claiming race at 6 furlongs.

The field is completed by first-time starter Classic Monarch (Monarchos - Rainbow's Classic by Regal Classic). I can only speculate that they were trying to find a turf race for this horse and this was the only one available. Classic Monarch is out of a winning mare who has produced 3 winners, including stakes winner Full Spectrum.
