Defense Rockets to Victory

Note that racing at Louisiana Downs was canceled after the fifth race, so no result for Peace Reigns (Peace Rules) or Phu Bird (Birdstone).

Defense Rockets to Victory

Ok, so that headline is a bit deceiving, she didn't exactly rocket to victory, but a win is a win. Rocket Defense (Peace Rules) hesitated a bit at the start, but kept her rail position. She was sitting just off of the leaders, Call of a Lion and Springtime Frolic. She went up to the leaders without much effort, and I thought that she would rocket on by, but 30-1 shot Call of a Lion hung tough. Those two soon separated from the field, dueling throughout the stretch (note, two horses separating from the rest of the field seemed to be the theme for the day. watch for it). In the end, Rocket Defense secured the victory by 3/4 of a length, but it was a very game try for Call of a Lion. Favorite Truck Ride came along for third, but was far behind the top two. Rocket Defense is the 14th winner for her sire, Peace Rules.

The Feet are Noisy and Fast over Min d'Oro

Min d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) was off in the middle of the pack, went to the rail, and moved up to join the leaders. On the front were Sweet Effie and Noisy Feet, with Cherokee Star close behind. Sweet Effie faded in the stretch, while Noisy Feet and Cherokee Star dueled to the wire, with Noisy Feet prevailing by a head. Min d'Oro flattened out a bit, but still held show.

Cliffy's Future and Viscout are Longandstrong

Longandstrong (Birdstone) was off slow and that was pretty much the end of the the race for him. He did make a middle move and did well to finish 5th. Up front, True Ally, was running off, establishing a lead of 10 lengths at one point. It didn't last, he retreated in the stretch. Cliffy's Future took the lead at that point, but he was closely pursued by Viscount. Those two soon separated from the field. At the wire, there was nothing between them, a dead heat. Behind them, Miami Hammer was running extremely green, but still managed to take the show spot.

Miss Dixie Dances Over Trifecta King

Makasi held the early advantage, but retreated quickly, allowing favorite Speedin Excess to take over. Trifecta King (Peace Rules) was in a good stalking position, but as in her previous two tries, she faded in the stretch. I'm not sure Fairplex is the best place for her long Peace Rules legs. Up front, Miss Dixie Dancer made a bid on the rail and got by Speedin Excess in a determined drive. No visible excuses for the favorite. Malusita closed well to pick up third.

Conga Queen (Congaree) came out of the gate well and went right to the lead. However, she was pursued by Country Living, who would not let Conga Queen have the rail spot. Mine That Bird (Birdstone - Mining My Own by Smart Strike) returns for another stakes try, after winning the Silver Deputy Stakes at Woodbine on August 23. Since that win, he has had one work at Woodbine. This time, he is joined in the starting gate by Bear's Conductor (Congaree - Symphonic Lady by Blare of Trumpets). Bear's Conductor broke his maiden in his last race, a 7 furlong (same distance as the Swynford) race at Woodbine on August 10. He has worked 3 times at Woodbine since the win.

Also returning from the Silver Deputy Stakes is Dryden (Double Honor - Suave Lady by Line In The Sand), who finished 3rd as the favorite. Earlier, Dryden was 2nd in the Colin Stakes at Woodbine.

Win and Reign (Tomahawk - Its a Ruby by Rubiano) and El Brujo (Candy Ride (ARG) - Enchanted Spell by Devil's Bag) met in the Vandal Stakes at Woodbine on August 10. Win and Reign was the winner of that race, restricted to Ontario-breds, but El Brujo was a rallying 2nd and just missed by a neck. The Vandal was Win and Reign's first win, he previously was 4th (behind Oconee) on July 20. El Brujo also finished 2nd in the restricted Claredon Stakes on July 5.

Lord of Greatness (Greatness - Dowager Lady by Whadjathink) won his only start, on August 15 at Woodbine, over L. A. Rules. In that race, he led virtually the entire race.

After breaking her maiden last time out in her 4th start, a Maiden Claiming race at Delaware Park on August 4, Mostly Peace (Peace Rules - Ms. Mostly by Copelan) returns in a claiming race. She has had one work since her race. Because this is a race featuring winners, the preview will be briefer than usual (similar to an allowance or stakes preview). Other first-crop sire represented in this one are Toccet, February Storm, and Roar of the Tiger.

Since this is a race for non-winners of 2, none of the entrants have more than one win. Shemeansbidness (Kafwain - Westwood by Storm Bird) is a maiden. She has raced 5 times, finishing 2nd in her last two, Maiden Claiming races at Ellis Park and Philadelphia Park. Her running lines include some familiar names like Ravin Maniac, Cameron Crazies, and Pride.

Like Mostly Peace, Holdem's Susie B (Put It Back - Fighting Beauty by Fighting Fit) and Sister Kathleen (Toccet - Sister Quick by Ide) broke their maidens in their last start. Holdem's Susie B, who won on the lead, had made one previous start. Sister Kathleen, who came from off the pace, is a veteran of three starts. One of her earlier opponents was Delaware Beauty (Delaware Township - Regal Beauty by Explosive Red) who broke her maiden in her one and only start on August 17 at Delaware. In that race, she led almost the whole way. Sister Kathleen was 5th.

Dawns Storm (February Storm - I Did It by Ide) and Fight Like a Tiger (Roar of the Tiger - Radon Dancer by Robyn Dancer) met in their last start, on August 26 at Delaware Park, finishing 2nd and 5th respectively. For both, it was their first try against winners.

Out Bounced (Outflanker - Bounce by Two Punch) has also made one try against winners, finishing 5th at Delaware Park on August 11. She adds blinkers for today's try.

News and Notes

Peace Town (Peace Rules) was scratched from the Oliver's Twist. The winner there was Mr. Keeper.

Favorite Charitable Man scored in the Futurity, Doremifasollatido took the Matron over a closing Persistently, and Terrain was awarded the Arlington-Washington Futurity after a double-disqualification. That was a rather unsatisfying race. Jose Adan was clearly the best horse, but he did come over. My biggest question is after deliberating for 13 minutes, how could the stewards not put just one of those horses out of the top 3, so that my $5 show ticket on Zion (who was 4th at 35-1) would be good?

Guadalcanal won his allowance race at Kentucky Downs in impressive fashion. He made an early move, dropped back, and then came driving in the stretch. He has now done something that Big Brown hasn't, won at 1 1/2 miles.

Yeah, I think I was more impressed with this win, even though the margin was less. He showed a lot of determination.
