Western Fire Sweeps Through Oklahoma

Nun Like Me broke on top, but he was soon joined and then passed, by Tale of Perfection. Nun Like Me soon weakend and Jedi Games took his place in the running order. Western Fire (Speightstown), who wasn't far off this pair, came 5-wide in the stretch and took command, becoming the 11th winner for Speightstown. Also closing well on the outside was Indy Express, who came up just short. Jedi Games couldn't keep up with the closing kicks of Western Fire and Indy Express, but he did hold well in third. Check out the $26.20 show payoff on Jedi Games. Who said there's no profit in betting to show?

Hey Smarty, it's Opposition Leader

Hey Smarty (Smarty Jones) took most of the money in this one, going off at less than even-money, and looked the part in the paddock. He's a flashy chestnut with a big white blaze. At the break, however, he came out awkwardly and slowly. Setting the pace was 39-1 Moving Fighter, with Hard to Twist chasing. Hey Smarty got it in gear and came running 4 wide, but Opposition Leader took the inside route and got there first. Hey Smarty did get his nose in front of Moving Fighter to take place. Opposition Leader clearly benefited from his previous race experience, which should be the case for Hey Smarty next time.

A Moral Victory

Final Judgement hesitated at the start and Harlan Prospector stumbled, as they spotted the field several lengths. Pound the Rock sprinted to the lead. Tapitbound and Presidente d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) secured good positions in 2nd and 3rd. But, Pound the Rock continued to increase his lead, to 6 and then 8 lengths. He couldn't keep this up, however, and the two stalkers began to make steady progress. At that point, Moral came along on the outside and he and Tapitbound scooted to the lead, as Presidente d'Oro weakened, ending up 5th. Moral outfought Tapitbound to get the win. Also closing well was Fradiablo, who picked up the show spot. I have to admit that I was really hoping for a victory by Presidente d'Oro purely for headline potential, on this Vice-Presidential debate night. But, there probably will be more opportunities for that.

Will the Alcibiades Be Smart?

October 3, 2008
Keeneland Race 9
Darley Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I)
1 1/16 miles
2-year Olds
Post Time: 5:10 PM TVG

P Horse
1. Be Smart
2. Devotee
3. Bon Jovi Girl
4. August Rush
5. Mani Bhavan
6. Dream Express
7. Amanwella

Be Smart (Smarty Jones - Eishin Bridle by Unbridled) returns after shocking everyone (except the Maiden Watch faithful) with a gate-to-wire victory at 5.5 furlongs at Saratoga on August 28. This time, she'll try a mile and a sixteenth and grade I company in the Alcibiades, on opening day at Keeneland. Since her victory, she has been working regularly at Churchill Downs. A victory in this one would send her to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Three for three grade I winner Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot - Rehear by Coronado's Quest), who took both the Spinaway (gr. I) and the Adirondack (gr. II) should be the favorite. She may have more to fear from her pedigree, which is more geared for short distances, than her opponents. Her finish position may be determined by how relaxed she is in the early going.

The only other stakes winner in the field is Bon Jovi Girl, who took the Fairway Stakes at Delaware Park on September 13. That race was at 1 1/16 miles. Bon Jovi Girl broke her maiden in her 2nd start on July 26, and also finished 3rd in allowance company on August 11. All her races have been at Delaware Park.

August Rush (Milwaukee Brew - Vividly by Touch Gold) broke her maiden at 5.5 furlongs on the yielding Saratoga turf on July 28. In her next start, she finished 6th, behind Mani Bhavan, in the Spinaway (gr. I).

Dream Empress (Bernstein - Chinese Empress by Nijinsky II) has made two turf starts, finishing 4th at Ellis Park on July 17, and winning on August 22 at Saratoga. The latter race was at the Alcibiades distance of 1 1/16 miles.

Devotee (Elusive Quality - Danuta by Sunday Silence) was victorious in her only start, a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight contest at Saratoga on August 31. Devotee is by Elusive Quality, sire of Smarty Jones. Finishing 2nd in Devotee's maiden win was Amanwella (Fusaichi Pegasus - Tempestina by Storm Cat), who was favored that day. Amanwella, who is still a maiden, previously finished 2nd at Saratoga on August 17, and 7th on July 28 on the yielding Saratoga turf. This latter race was won by fellow Alcibiades runner August Rush.
