Be Smart Overtaken by an Express

As expected, Mani Bhavan broke on top and went right to the lead. However, Be Smart (Smarty Jones) went right up to her. After 6 furlongs, Be Smart stuck her head in front and assumed the lead, as Mani Bhavan began to retreat. Alas, Dream Empress was closing with a lot of energy and Be Smart had nothing left to stop her assault. But, she was well clear of the third place finisher, Devotee. It was a very promising stakes debut for Be Smart, who was making her first start against winners and was going from 5.5 furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. She should continue to improve off of this effort. Be Smart is the first stakes-placed performer for her sire, Smarty Jones.

Marija Gets her Wish Over Noble Rule

Ariel Rose and Chatter Wine dueled for the early lead, while Noble Rule (Peace Rules) lingered at the back on the pack. Samantha G, who had been stalking the top pair, hid the lead in the stretch, as Ariel Rose and Chatter Wine began to retreat. Marija's Wish was rallying at this time. Also making up some ground was Noble Rule. Marija's Wish was in a bit tight, but got through and swept past a stubborn Samantha G. Noble Rule worked her way up to third, but didn't threaten the top two. The fractions in this race were less than impressive, so it was encouraging that Noble Rule was able to close.

Reynaldo Tries his Wizardry in the Lane's End

Keeneland Race 7

Post Time: 4:22 PM TVG

5. Pioneerof the Nile
6. Majestic Blue
7. Zion
8. Square Eddie

10. Deposer
11. Advice

Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown - Holiday Runner by Meadowlake) will make his second stakes try, after finishing 3rd in the Saratoga Special (gr. II) on August 14. In that race, he broke in the air and never really recovered. However, he did manage to beat out several horses for third. Reynaldothewizard's first start resulted in an impressive victory on July 2 at Churchill Downs, where he stalked early and took control late. Four horses that finished behind Reynaldothewizard that day have since won. Reynaldothewizard has been working regularly since the Saratoga Special, including one work at Keeneland.

Flashmans Papers (Exceed and Excel (AUS) - Franglais (GER) by Lion Cavern), Square Eddie (Smart Strike - Forty Gran by El Gran Senor), and Deposer (Kheleyf - Bezant (IRE) by Zamindar) invade from England, where Flashmans Papers was a stakes winner. He has raced a total of 7 times, breaking his maiden in the Windsor Castle Stakes on June 17. More recently, he was 5th in the Toteswinger Sirenia (Eng-III) on September 6. Second in that race was Square Eddie, who had broken his maiden on July 22. Square Eddie also finished 11th in the Coventry Stakes, a race in which Lord Shanakill was third. Deposer also ran in the Toteswinger Sirenia, finishing 6th. He broke his maiden on July 9, and also finished 6th in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes (Eng-II) on August 22.

Terrain (Sky Mesa - Minery by Forty Niner), Advice (Chapel Royal - Word o' Wisdom by Hennessy), Zion (Thunder Gulch - Riverkeeper by Awesome Again), and His Greatness (Honour and Glory - Klair Alley by Well Decorated) all met on September 13 in the Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington Park, a race full of troubled running lines. Terrain finished third in the race, but was awarded the victory after a double-disqualification of Jose Adan, who crossed the wire in front, and Advice. This victory left Terrain with an unblemished record, as he had previously broken his maiden on July 3 at Churchill Downs, and won the Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes on August 2. Advice finished 2nd in the Arlington-Washington Futurity, but was placed 3rd. His only previous start was a maiden win at Arlington Park on July 3. Fourth in the Arlington-Washington was Zion, who also had to alter course late. He broke his maiden on July 5 at Churchill Downs, and then finished 4th in an allowance race (behind Jose Adan) at Arlington Park on August 13. Zion will be closing from far off the pace. His Greatness was mostly clear of the trouble in the Arlington-Washington Futurity, finishing 7th. He came into that race off of a maiden win at Arlington Park on August 9

Notonthesamepage (Catienus - Blue Holiday by Cure the Blues) is the only other entrant with stakes experience. After breaking his maiden in his second start on April 30 at Churchill Downs, Notonthesamepage made his third start 3 months later in the Tyro Stakes. He was heavily favored in that one, and led for much of the race, but tired late and finished 2nd. Next time out, he tried grade I company in the Hopeful, finishing 5th.

Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker - Star of Goshen by Lord at War (ARG)) has made 2 starts, both at 1 1/16 miles on the grass at Saratoga. He finished 4th in his first start on August 4, before winning his next start on August 25. He has had several works since then, including one at Keeneland.

Majestic Blue (Forestry - Cariada by Seeking the Gold) was a winner in his only start, a 5.5 furlong contest at Saratoga on August 27. He has had 4 works since that victory.

Collegiate and Gemswick Park Tangle in Frizette

10. Gemswick Park

Collegiate (Saarland - La Sorbonne (ARG) by Southern Halo) and Gemswick Park (Speightstown - Queen's Park by Relaunch) face off in the Frizette at Belmont. Collegiate broke her maiden in her first start, going gate-to-wire on June 19 at Belmont, and then finished 4th in the Schuylerville (gr. III), and third in the Spinaway (gr. I), both at Saratoga. Perhaps the return to Belmont will signal a return to winning for Collegiate. She will be adding blinkers for this race and boasts several nice works since the Spinaway. Gemswick Park broke her maiden in her most recent start on September 14 at Belmont Park by 6 lengths, while leading for most of the race. She finished 2nd in her first start, where she was also a pace factor. Gemswick Park has had two works since her win.

Finishing 5th in the Spinaway, behind Collegiate, was Winning Brew (Milwaukee Brew - Winning Kiss by Grand Slam). Winning Brew had previously finished 6th in the Astoria at Belmont on June 29. Her maiden victory came at Penn National on May 14. Winning Brew, who adds blinkers today, had a sharp workout on September 30 to prepare for this race.

Persistently (Smoke Glacken - Just Reward by Deputy Minister), Heavenly Vision (Forestry - Holy Bubbette by Holy Bull), and Miss Ocean City (Mineshaft - Madam Lagonza by Kingmambo) met in the Matron Stakes at Belmont on September 13, finishing 2nd, 5th, and 6th respectively. Persistently trailed early, before closing well late, which she has done in all three of her races, including her maiden win on August 17 at Saratoga. One would think that the added distance would help her chances, but sometimes it doesn't work that way. Persistently has had one work since the Matron. Heavenly Vision, who was the favorite in the Matron, won her only other start, a maiden race at Saratoga on August 24. She has had two Belmont works since the Matron. Miss Ocean City has also made 2 starts. Interestingly, in Miss Ocean City's maiden win on July 27 at Saratoga, she finished in front of Persistently who was third. Miss Ocean City had a bullet work at Saratoga on September 26.

Coffee in Bed (Toccet - Grace Bay by Waquoit), by first-crop sire Toccet, broke her maiden last time out, in her third start at Monmouth Park on September 13.

Also by a first-year sire is War Echo (Tapit - Wild Vision by Wild Again). War Echo finished 7th in Miss Ocean City's maiden race (where Persistently was third), before going gate-to-wire in her most recent start on September 10. War Echo is a half-sister to Pyro. Actually, they are more closely related than that since Pyro is by Pulpit, who is also the sire of Tapit. War Echo has worked twice since her win.

Sky Diva (Sky Mesa - Swift Girl by Unbridled) and Royal Ballade (Elusive Quality - Musical Chimes by In Excess (IRE)) were both winners in their only starts. Sky Diva, who ran at Delaware Park on September 9, was a winner by 10 lengths. She has had one work since that run. Royal Ballade's winning margin was 6 lengths, as she scored on September 14 at Belmont. She has also worked once since that win.

For all those who said, if only Munnings hadn't been left at the break, if only Cribnote had run straight, if only Break Water Edison wouldn't have been bumped, and also for those who said, forget all that Vineyard Haven would have won anyway, we present the Hopeful part II, otherwise known as the Champagne.

Munnings (Speightstown - La Comete by Holy Bull) finished 3rd in the Hopeful, after stumbling at the start and then rushing a bit. He had previously broken his maiden in impressive fashion on July 26 at Saratoga. Since the Hopeful, he has worked three times.

Vineyard Haven (Lido Palace (CHI) - Princess Aloha by Aloha Prospector) won the Hopeful in gate-to-wire fashion, after previously finishing third in the Sanford (gr. II). His maiden win came from just off the pace on June 28 at Calder. Since the Hopeful, he has worked three times, including a 5 furlong bullet at Belmont on September 29.

Cribnote (Read the Footnotes - Totebook by Notebook), by first-crop sire Read the Footnotes, finished 2nd in the Hopeful despite blowing the turn and heading for the outside rail. He adds blinkers for today's contest. He broke his maiden by an impressive 13 lengths, after finishing a troubled 4th in his debut on July 3. He has had two works since the Hopeful.

Finishing fourth in the Hopeful was Break Water Edison (Lemon Drop Kid - August Storm by Storm Creek). He did not have the same magnitude of trouble as Munnings and Cribnote, but he did break outward and was bumped. Previously, Break Water Edison had finished 2nd in the Saratoga Special (gr. II). His maiden win came on July 17 at Belmont. He has worked twice since the Hopeful.

Girolamo (A. P. Indy - Get Lucky by Mr. Prospector) and Gone Astray (Dixie Union - Illicit by Mr. Prospector) met in the Futurity at Belmont on September 13, finishing 4th and 5th respectively. Girolamo closed a bit in that one, while Gone Astray raced evenly. Girolamo broke his maiden in a 7 furlong race at Saratoga on August 16. Since the Futurity, he has had one work. Gone Astray finished third in his first start (behind Brave Victory who was 2nd), before drawing off to victory on August 23 at Saratoga. His one work since the Futurity was a 4 furlong bullet on September 30.

Brave Victory (Lion Heart - I'm In Celebration by Copelan) finished 2nd twice, before breaking his maiden impressively by 7 lengths on September 20 at Belmont. Brave Victory is by leading freshman sire Lion Heart.

Hello Broadway (Broken Vow - Nightstorm by Storm Cat), A. P. Cardinal (A. P. Indy - Smok'n Frolic by Smoke Glacken), and Ventana (Toccet - Full Figure by Polish Numbers) were victorious in their first and only starts. Hello Broadway, who came from off the pace in his August 30 triumph at Saratoga, has had three works at Belmont since his win. A. P. Cardinal, who is the first foal out of grade II winner and millionaire Smok'n Frolic, dueled early before winning his September 14 race at Monmouth. He has had one work since that start. Ventana, by first-crop sire Toccet, won his race on September 5 at Belmont by 5 lengths. Prince Charming, 2nd in that race, has since broken his maiden. Ventana has worked three times at Belmont since that victory.

Hug It Out (Medaglia d'Oro - Dazzling Contrast by General Meeting) tries allowance company after breaking her maiden first time out at Arlington Park on August 27. In that race, she went to the lead early and just held on. Since that race, she has had three 4 furlong works with almost identical times of around 48 and a half seconds. There appears to be plenty of speed in this one, so Hug It Out better learn to rate if she wants to see the winner's circle.

Runaway Heart (Runaway Groom - Atrial Flutter by Lear Fan) broke her maiden in her second start, winning by 8 lengths at Calder on May 31. She then finished 9th in the Debutante (gr. III) at Churchill Downs on June 28, and 6th in the Colleen Stakes on August 2 at Monmouth. The Colleen was won by Smokin Bayou, whose maiden victory came over Petty Things (Put It Back - Silk Petticoat by Halo's Image). Petty Things won her next start by 9 lengths in gate-to-wire fashion at Arlington Park on July 26. Since that race, she finished 7th in the Ontario Debutante Stakes on August 16 at Woodbine.

Champagne Launch (Cuvee - Launch a Double by Bright Launch) and Champ Laila (Champali - Valid Deduction by Bet Big), who are both by first-crop sires, met on August 16. In that race, Champagne Launch was victorious and Champ Laila was a closing third. Champ Laila broke her maiden next time out at Turfway Park on September 12. In her next start, Champagne Launch tried stakes company in the Bassinet Stakes at River Downs where she finished 9th.

Kentucky Peaches (Mancini - Prado's Tune by El Prado (IRE)) broke her maiden in her second start on June 27 at Churchill Downs coming from just off the pace. Since then, she has faced allowance company 3 times, finishing 8th, 4th, and most recently, 3rd at Ellis Park on August 29. Fourth in that race was Talkinontherun (Bernstein - Toot's Classic by Well Decorate), who had previously broke her maiden on the lead on August 10 at Ellis Park. More recently, Talkinontherun finished 3rd at Turfway Park in allowance company behind multiple winner Ravin Maniac.

Completing the field is Windmill Hill (Grand Slam - Magical Holiday by Slew o' Gold), who broke her maiden in her most recent start at Turfway Park on September 5.
