Stakes Action at Woodbine

I have to go out of town for a funeral, so I will be unable to do analyzes of the races for October 5, but I wanted to mention the Maiden Watch horses running in the Woodbine stakes. First in the Grey Stakes, Mine That Bird (Birdstone - Mining My Own by Smart Strike) looks for his 4th straight win and his 3rd straight stakes win. Among his opponents is fellow Maiden Watch horse Bear's Conductor (Congaree - Symphonic Lady by Blare of Trumpets), who finished 4th in the Swynford behind Mine That Bird. Southern Exchange (Exchange Rate - Miss Madeleine by Woodman) has also won 2 stakes at Woodbine, the Victoria and the Colin. In his last start, he journeyed to Del Mar where he was 4th in the Del Mar Futurity.

The Mazarine (Can-III) features 4 Maiden Watch horses, all by different sires. Bedtime Story (Pleasantly Perfect - Fairy Tale by Seattle Slew), Livin Lovin (Birdstone - Nurse Margaret by Captain Bodgit), and Mullins Beach (Speightstown - Treasure Beach by Silver Deputy) are all coming into the race off of their maiden wins. Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro - Embraceable by Dehere) broke her maiden in her debut on July 26, and then finished 2nd in the Muskoka Stakes on September 1. The winner of that race, Van Lear Rose (Stroll - Devaluation by Conquistador Cielo) is also back in the Mazarine.

Read more about the Grey and the Mazarine here.

Also in action on October 5 are Saarbright (Saarland) making his 2nd start in Race 2 at Hawthorne, Kelode (Saarland) debuting in Race 6 at Keeneland, Legacy and Lace (Saarland) debuting in Race 5 at Golden Gate, and River Saar (Saarland), and Dashin' Idea (Congaree) in Race 1 at Mountaineer.

I just got back and the first thing I did was watch the replay of Mine That Bird's race. He sure looked good. The favorite, Southern Exchange, was certainly rank. Mine That Bird has now earned $324,240. Then, Livin Lovin almost made it a stakes double for Birdstone. Sounds like the Mine That Bird's connections were leaning towards not going to the Breeders' Cup, but that could change.

Van Lear Rose is a great filly - too bad they let her sire go to Italy, his stats are super.
