Texas Birdstone (Birdstone) broke running and soon established a decent lead. Throughout the race, he continued to increase this lead until the final margin was 7. Not much drama in this one, but a sweet maiden victory in a stakes. Yes, it was a stakes restricted to Arkansas-breds and there was only one winner in the field, but you still had to like the impressive way he drew off. This should give him some confidence.

Pick is an Allowance Express

This one was taken off of the turf and run on the sloppy main track. Forest Grinder was a scratch. Pick's Express (Speightstown) broke a step slow, but was rushed up on the inside of leader Sir Edgar. These two dueled, drawing well clear of the rest of the field. In the stretch, Pick's Express drew ahead of Sir Edgar as they both drifted out. New God Code was closing, but a tired Pick's Express had enough left to take the win. Sir Edgar settled for third.

Winestone Goes for a Truck Ride

Winestone (Birdstone) broke decently and secured a rail spot in 3rd and then 2nd, behind the leader Worry Wart Mary. She drew even with that one and then went by on the turn, moving rather easily. Worry Wart Mary had no reponse. Truck Ride was trying to close on the inside, but Winestone continued to increase her advantage, cruising to the win. Missunitednations and Payton d'Oro Waltz Away

I was pretty confident in this one since Missunitednations (Peace Rules), who was 2nd in her debut, was coming out of the same race as Winestone, who was already a winner on the day. Missunitednations broke a bit slow, but soon was up on the lead from her rail spot. She was joined early by Ultimate Beauty. Ultimate Beauty soon began retreating and Payton d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) took up the chase. But, there was no catching Missunitednations, who continued to increase her lead throughout. The final margin was more than 7. Payton d'Oro was well clear of the rest to complete the Maiden Watch exacta (a whopping $12.60).

Displaying the Perfect Edge

Perfect Edge (Pleasantly Perfect) broke well from his outside post, and had enough speed to clear the field and get to the rail. Longshot Wanted Fugitive kept him company early, but he began to retreat after 6 furlongs. Yankee Empire and Blueberry's Start tried to make some progress, but Perfect Edge increased his lead in the stretch and then ran evenly down the lane. A nice time (1:41.68) for the race as well. I certainly wasn't surprised with Perfect Edge's victory, but I was a little surprised that he went gate-to-wire. Perfect Edge looked pretty professional out there. Is there still room to get in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile turf?

Herrand Not a Shy Miss

Herrand (Peace Rules) outbroke the field and established a clear lead, but the pack soon caught up. The favorite, Kristys Shy Miss, who was not far back, moved up to challenge and put her head in front. At that point, it looked like Herrand would have to settle for second. But Herrand showed a lot of determination, fighting back. They hit the line together, a bob and a photo to decide the winner. Herrand got her head down to take it. She certainly showed a lot of toughness for a first-timer. It was nice to start the day with a win (Winestone), but even better to end with one, as Herrand was our 6th winner on the day.

Beauseant Overrpowers the Martini

Greenapple Martini (Medaglia d'Oro) did kind of a half-rear in the gate, just as it sprang open. That was pretty much the race for her, although she did manage to pass a couple. Up front, it was all Flashy Got Even, at least until the stretch. At that point, Beauseant made her bid for victory. Flashy Got Even had no answer, as Beauseant pulled away. Apparently, Equibase has something against Bosco Rules (Peace Rules). For the 2nd week in a row, I did not receive advance notification for Bosco Rules' start at Hawthorne. Last week, he was a scratch, but this week he made it into the gate. Pirates Vow held the early lead, but Devil's Halo was never far back. Wow what a sire BIRDSTONE is turning out to be.I always liked him on the track and now I just love watching his offspring excel. I bet that his $10,000 price for a live foal will be going up.

I really love how Birdstone is doing as a sire.  i was wondering what happened with Heir to the Stone? i knew there was a little issue with his shins, but did it become a bigger problem

Word is the shin is doing well and he has been jogging this whole time. Never was just stuck in his stall doing nothing. Better to let it heal than damage even more. Kudos to the trainer and connections for not rushing him.
