Maiden Watch in the Breeders' Cup

The Pre-Entries for the Breeders' Cup came out at 11:00 AM on November 16, so I am sure that you've all perused and dissected them by now. Maiden Watch is very well represented, with runners in all four 2-year old races, as listed below:

Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) - 2nd preference in the Juvenile Fillies

Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I)
Be Smart
(Smarty Jones)
C. S. Silk (Medaglia d'Oro)
Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) - 1st preference in the Juvenile Fillies Turf

Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf
Mine That Bird (Birdstone) - 1st preference in the Juvenile.

Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I)
Mine That Bird (Birdstone) - 2nd preference in the Juvenile Turf
Munnings (Speightstown)

We will be talking about these horses more throughout the next week, especially after the post position draw on Tuesday, but for now the question is, Which of the Maiden Watch horses do you think is most likely to hit the board?

The Breeders' Cup could certainly have a lot to say regarding who finishes the year as leading first-crop sire. Lion Heart jumped out to a quick start in that department, but Tapit has been steadily gaining. All of the top first-crop sires are represented in the Breeders' Cup and the title could be determined next weekend.

Rocketing Returns Heracles to the Speight of Hand

Heracles went to the lead, pursued by Rocketing Returns. These two dueled throughout. Heracles seemed to have the upper hand, but Rocketing Returns kept coming back. The win came down to a bob of the head, which went to Rocketing Returns. Speight of Hand (Speightstown) was no match for either one of these, but he was clear in third.

Hooh Why Over Cassidy's Pride

Bold Storm went to the lead from the gate. Cassidy's Pride (Medaglia d'Oro) broke well, but was unable to clear the field from her outside post and instead was tucked in in fourth. After a half, Cassidy's Pride came up the inside and took the lead. But this was short-lived, as she began to tire. Instead it was left to Hooh Why and Beauty for Ashes, who separated themselves from the rest of the field. They raced as a team, and hit the wire together. They examined the photo for a very long time, it was beginning to look like a deadheat. But, finally Hooh Why was declared the winner.

Joe Rocks Da Bear

I thought that Da Bear Facts (Congaree) was a shoo-in for this one, after all the 5 horse had won the first two races on the day and Da Bear Facts was the 5. Extreme Warrior took the early advantage, chased by Tamborim and Deposer. Extreme Warrior gave it up after 6 furlongs, as Rockin' Joe hit the front. Meanwhile, Da Bear Facts had settled around mid-pack. He was swung wide and came running. He got even with Rockin' Joe, but just couldn't get in front of him. It took a photo once again, but Rockin' Joe was the winner. It was a good run for Da Bear Facts, however, who continues to improve with every race.

I'm a little wiped out with the all the Breeders' Cup Activities, so I am only going to preview the maiden races for October 17. Frankly, I don't do much for allowance races anyway, so I will simply list them after the maiden races and recap them tomorrow.

The Smarty Jones colt, Ricoriatoa (Smarty Jones - Lovely Regina by Deputy Minister), debuts at the difficult distance of 7 furlongs. I really wish there was alittle more time until the BC for Perfect Edge, his race was eye opening and I would have loved to see him run in the BC!

Ricoriatoa actually ran in a 5-furlong exhibition race at Turfway Park on Sept. 27, featuring riders from the North American Riding Academy. He came in 3rd under student rider Anna Roberts. Bloodhorse.com had an article on it, but the colt's name was styled Rico Ri Atoa. The language of the name is Portuguese, it seems to be a combination of words, and, I'm guessing, may come from a popular Brazilian movie (1957) titled Rico Ri a Toa. Makes some sense since the colt is bred and owned by Stud TNT, which, I believe, is based in Brazil.

Nancy - Thanks for the info on Ricoriatoa. I was thinking it must be something Brazilian, because the only other references were movie sites in Brazil.

Do you know how the Speightstown'd are doing on the Pro-Ride?  I was wondering if you think Munnings will handle it?

BittelRoad - Good question. I'd have to check my notes, but off the top of my head I don't recall any Speightstowns on the Pro-Ride. He's had winners on Polytrack, but as we know, it's not necessarily the same.
