Striking the Winning Account

November 1 is "Stars of Tomorrow" day at Churchill Downs, featuring all 2-year old races. Maiden Watch is well-represented with 10 horses running, including Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) in the Pocahontas Stakes (gr. III). Because of the volume of racing, I will cover only the Churchill races in depth after recapping yesterday's results. The remaining horses in action today are listed below. Rockland did not draw into his race at Laurel, that one was won by Smart Shot.

A Winning Account

Hannah's Dowery stumbled at the start and was never involved. Magical Affair and Regretable Romance dueled early, but Magical Affair soon emerged with a clear lead. Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect) was sitting 4th. She easily moved into 2nd, but Magical Affair was stubborn. However, Magical Affair began to drift out in the stretch and Shared Account went inside of her to get the victory. Shared Account is the 8th winner for her sire, Pleasantly Perfect.

Jak Strikes the Front

Strike Jak (Peace Rules) broke ok and secured a rail spot in about 4th. Xquenda and Hickory Gray emerged from the leading pack, dueling and separating themselves from the rest of the field. Strike Jak lost some ground, but settled into a nice position. She began moving up on the turn. Cacun Cacun was moving too and these two went by the leaders as a team. However, at that point, Strike Jak began to separate from Cacun Cacun, drawing off to win by better than 6. Strike Jak is Peace Rules' 22nd winner.

Home Skillet Goes Rough Shot over Tiger Rules

Tiger Rules (Peace Rules) was last out of the gate, but soon rushed up into the lead. That early energy may have cost him, however, as he could not hold off the closing kicks of Home Skillet and Rough Shot.
This raced was marred by the breakdown and subsequent euthanization of Mo The Tiger. His jockey, Sheldon Russell was taken to the hospital.

Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro - Lotta Kim by Roar) makes her 5th start overall and her 2nd stakes attempt in the Pocahontas. After breaking her maiden in her second start at Churchill Downs on June 13, she finished 2nd in the Debutante (gr. III) at that track on June 28. Then, she got a bit of a break, but returned to score an impressive allowance win at Keeneland on October 17. She has had one work since then, going 3 furlongs in :37 at Churchill Downs (the fastest of 10 works). Rachel Alexandra has a very distinctive marking on her face. On her forehead, she has the Medaglia d'Oro diamond that so many of his offspring have. But, then there is a gap before a blaze starts. The blaze is almost rectangular in shape with very straight sides. Watch for it.

Abbott Hall (El Corredor - Miss Abbott by Cure the Blues) has faced stakes company in her last two starts. After breaking her maiden in her 2nd start (by 6 lengths) at a mile on the Ellis Park turf on August 23, she won the Happy Ticket Stakes on the turf at Louisana Downs on September 20. In her next start, she finished 4th in the Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on October 9 behind Laragh, who was third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Since that race, she has had one work at Churchill. Abbott Hall is one of the few entrants with experience at a mile or more.

Another who has been a mile is Pretty Prolific (Lion Heart - Seattle Way by Seattle Slew). Pretty Prolific broke her maiden in her first start, at Churchill Downs on June 22. She then ran third in the Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga on August 13. Last time out, she was favored in the Arlington-Washington Lassie, but was no match for C. S. Silk and finished 6th. She has been working regularly at Churchill since that race.

The only other entrant with stakes experience is Petty Things (Put It Back - Silk Petticoat by Halo's Image) who finished 7th in the Ontario Debutante Stakes on August 16. Petty Things broke her maiden in her 2nd start, going gate-to-wire on July 26 at Arlington Park. Her most recent start resulted in another gate-to-wire victory, this time in an allowance race at Keeneland on October 4. She has had two Churchill works since her win.

Selective (Tapit - Wednesday's Child by Storm Cat) has made 2 starts. First time out, at Saratoga on August 14, she finished 2nd after leading most of the race. In her next start, on September 10 at Belmont, she did lead all the way. She has had five works since then, including three at Churchill Downs.

Another with 2 starts is Sara Louise (Malibu Moon - Kings Lynn by Mt. Livermore). She finished 4th first time out at Saratoga on August 28 behind Be Smart. She then broke her maiden on September 21 at Belmont. Unlike many in this race, Sara Louise has come from off the pace in both of her races. Since her maiden win, she has had three works at Churchill Downs.

Dr. Zic (Milwaukee Brew - Royal Corona by Holy Bull) and Honchis'n Ponchis (City Zip - Kelli's Song by Dixieland Band) were both victorious in their only starts. Dr. Zic's win came in gate-to-wire fashion in a 6.5 furlong race on October 12 at Keeneland. She has had one work since that triumph. Honchis'n Ponchis also won at Keeneland, in a 7 furlong race on October 4. She came from slightly off the pace to take that one. She has had two works since then.
