Pamona Has a Ball in the Sharp Cat

Two stakes wins on November 1, Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro) takes the Princess Elizabeth at Woodbine and Pamona Ball (Pleasantly Perfect) wins the Sharp Cat to become the first stakes winner for her sire, Pleasantly Perfect. Plus,  2 wins on the Churchill "Stars of Tomorrow" card.

Because of the volume of results, I'm only going to do recaps for the stakes races and the races from Churchill Downs.

Retraceable is a Princess

Sanguine took the early lead, pursued by favorite High Mist. Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro) began making up ground on the turn, but was forced very wide. It didn't matter, she rolled to the lead and drew off under a hand ride.

Pamona is Sharp

Ten Churros took the early lead, pursued by Oro Blanco. Pamona Ball (Pleasantly Perfect) made her move on the inside and went past them all to become Pleasantly Perfect's first stakes winner. Toro Bonito closed off a slow start and Ten Churros hung around for third. The talk before the race was about which Baffert horse would win. Hmmm.. well, he did finish 2nd and 3rd.

Sara Takes the Pocahontas over Rachel

Sara Louise was impressive in here, coming 6 wide and overpowering the leaders, but Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) had all kinds of trouble. She was stuck with no place to go and only got room by bullying her way through. I'm not saying that she would have won if she had gotten clear earlier, but I think that the margin would have been less.

I continue to be more impressed with the girls than the boys in the 2006 crop (think Stardom Bound vs. Midshipman for example). Not only was Sara Louise's finish time faster than Capt. Candyman Can's triumph in the Iroquois, but both Sara Louise and Rachel Alexandra finished with good energy. In the Iroquois it looked as if Capt. Candyman Can was tired, he was just less tired than the rest of the field.

Presents for Bert Gets an Inside Gift

Rewiring led until late, but this one really belonged to the closers. Presents for Berti (Congaree) was coming wide into the stretch, but Calvin Borel switched him inside and that may have made the difference. He was able to get the jump on the other closers, especially Baryshnikov and Bearpath, to score an easy win. Presidente d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) did not draw in from the AE list.

Jazz Works His Magic

Secret Commander held a brief lead, but he was soon overtaken by Jazzandthemagician (Birdstone) and The Gang of Four (Medaglia d'Oro). Those two separated themselves from the rest of the pack. For awhile, it looked as though it might be a Maiden Watch photo, but Jazzandthemagician was too strong for The Gang of Four, as he made his debut a winning one. He certainly was no secret, as he took a lot of early money and went off as the 2nd choice. Jazzandthemagician is the 10th winner for his sire, Birdstone. It was also a good debut for Maestro and Master (Smarty Jones). He tired down the lane, but still finished 4th. The other Smarty Jones, Smart Attire, showed early speed before tiring. An Auspicious Beginning

Fiesta d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) stumbled at the break, raced wide, and showed little, finishing 11th. But, it didn't matter as nobody was catching Auspicious on this day. Auspicious was allowed to settle in 4th, and then came running between horses. After that, it was just a matter of how much she would win by. The answer was 6. The early pace setter, Sally J, outran everyone else to take 2nd. Flat Chance came late for third.

Sweet Kristen (Peace Rules), Calder Race 4, Allowance: scratched.

Long Live Dixe (Peace Rules), Laurel Race 2, Claiming: Finished 5th.

Wiggle and a Wink (Congaree), Woodbine Race 2, Maiden Special Weight: Finished 2nd. A good effort. She was no match for the winner, but was well clear of the rest.

Maiden Watch horses make up 1/3 of the Tempted Stakes field as Livin Lovin (Birdstone - Nurse Margaret by Captain Bodgit) and Gemswick Park (Speightstown - Queen's Park by Relaunch) both seek their first stakes wins. Both come out of good stakes efforts. Livin Lovin finished 2nd behind Van Lear Rose in the Mazarine (gr. III) at Woodbine on October 5 at a mile and a sixteenth. Van Lear Rose then finished 6th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The 4th place finisher in the Mazarine, Retraceable, came back to win the Princess Elizabeth Stakes on November 1. Livin Lovin has had one work since the Mazarine. Gemswick Park was 3rd behind Sky Diva in the Frizette (gr. I) at a mile at Belmont Park, after setting the pace. Sky Diva came back to finish 3rd in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Persistently, who was 2nd in the Frizette, finished 5th in the Breeders' Cup. Gemswick Park has worked three times since the Frizette. I am a little worried that these two will compromise each other's chances, as both like to go to the lead.

Fools in Love (Not for Love - Parlez by French Deputy) won her debut, at Monmouth Park on July 5. Since then, she has faced only stakes company. She finished 3rd in the Colleen Stakes at Monmouth on August 2, 2nd in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth on August 31, and 2nd in the Maryland Million Lassie Stakes on October 4. Fools in Love has stalked in most of her races. She has had one work at Monmouth since the Maryland Million. The furthest she has been is 7 furlongs.

The only other entrant with stakes experience is Obsequious (Fusaichi Pegasus - User Cat by Storm Cat). She broke her maiden on August 16 at Saratoga, going almost gate-to-wire in a 5.5 furlong contest. She then finished 4th in the Matron (gr. II) at 7 furlongs at Belmont on September 13. She has not run since then, but has been working regularly at Saratoga.

Pull Dancer (Pulpit - Mayhavebeentheone by Arch) broke her maiden in her second try, on October 10 at Keeneland in a 6 furlong race. She had previously finished 2nd in a 6 furlong race at Belmont on September 14, behind Gemswick Park. Pull Dancer has shown the ability to close in her short career. She has one work since her maiden win, a 4 furlong work at Belmont.

Morning Chatter (Proud Citizen - Chastity Belle by Gilded Time) finished 2nd in her only start, at 7 furlongs on September 21 at Belmont. In that race, she stalked and took the lead, but was outfinished. Morning Chatter has been working regularly since that win.

Tee). Jitter in Rome and Naked Passion were both winners in their only starts. Jitter in Rome went gate-to-wire in her win at Mountaineer on August 22, scoring by more than 11. Naked Passion pressed the early pace, before taking control and winning by 4. Jill Lynn Jones was victorious in her 4th start, all at Mountaineer, where she romped by 9.

Special Velvet (Special Times - White Velvet by Judge Smells) broke her maiden in her 4th start, and then finished 6th and 5th in two West Virginia-bred stakes races. This is her frist attempt in an allowance race.

Razzdango (Horse Chestnut - Altar Girl by Pulpit) broke her maiden in her 2nd start, on August 21 at Charles Town, and then finished 3rd in an allowance/optional claiming race at Laurel. Her most recent effort came at Charles Town, where she finished 5th in an allowance race as the favorite.

Julesnomenclator (Hoopsworld - Fortheloveofjules by Jules) went gate-to-wire in her maiden triumph, winning by 9. She then finished 6th in an allowance race at Mountaineer on October 17.

Zavabelle (Zavata - Our Thriller by Apalachee) finished 6th in her most recent start, a claiming race at Keeneland on October 18. Previously, she had broken her maiden at Hoosier Park on October 3. That was her 4th start.
