P. J.'s Canary Sings a Victory Tune

P. J.'s Canary (Birdstone) broke well and was sent right to the lead. She set some quick fractions (:21.87, :45.86) while hugging the rail under Calvin Borel, but she seemed to get stronger. She was 4, then, 5 ahead, and finished better than 6 in front of favorite Bizzee Mizzee. P.J.'s Canary is the 11th winner for Birdstone. Ultimate Bliss won the photo for place over Saint Brigid. Miss Marple (Saarland), our other horse in here (Con Lover (Congaree) did not draw in off the AE list), broke slowly. She did get involved late, however, and passed a bunch to end up 6th. A better break and she'll hit the board.

Rockland is Longandstrong Over Coltraider

Rockland (Smarty Jones) went right to the lead, securing the rail. But, he had company in longshot Coltraider, Arizona Sunset, and Longandstrong (Birdstone). Arizona Sunset began to retreat, as the other three separated themselves from the pack. In the stretch, Longandstrong tired, leaving the race to Rockland and Coltraider. They raced as a team and hit the wire together, but Rockland got his nose down to become Smarty Jones' 7th winner. Bobby and Bob, Jo Jo Love, Solidify, and Toby the Coal Man (who ran at Aqueduct) were scratched.

A Clash of Arms Down the Stretch

A couple of them mixed it up early, including Bernie's Not Shy and Notecard, but it was Clash of Arms (Speightstown) who emerged with the lead. Almost immediately, he began to put space between himself and the rest of the field. Great Magic was his closest pursuer, but he was a good 5 or 6 lengths back. The favorite, Notecard, was sent after him, but Clash of Arms was still running comfortably. Notebook ran somewhat greenly in the stretch to allow Clash of Arms the easy win. Clash of Arms is the 12th winner for Speightstown.

American Dances Over Speight of Hand

Speight of Hand (Speightstown) broke well, but sat at the back of a well-bunched field early on. The leader was Aswaaq, who was pursued by Mesa Sunrise and American Dance. Speight of Hand was moving easily, making progress on his own when others were feeling the whip. He made a move and came between American Dance and Aswaaq. Speight of Hand was squeezed, and Aswaaq had to check. American Dance and Speight of Hand went forward, but American Dance got the upper hand. There was a steward's inquiry, but no change was made. Miner's Escape was scratched.

Smart Engagement Achieves Glory Gold

Glory Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) broke near the front, but settled back to 6th on the rail. Hanna Can Fly assumed the lead, pursed by Paraiba. Lilly of Paradise was also in the mix. In the stretch, positions reversed as the closers began their runs and many of the pace factors faded. Paraiba remained involved, however. 53-1 Sunny was closing well, but Smart Engagement was going better and she prevailed over a very stubborn Paraiba. Glory Gold did not seem comfortable amongst fillies and ended up 8th. Asscher Cut, Jackpot Julie, Stormie Gray, and Zipolina were scratched. Some of these will reappear today.

Janou and Dobra are Inspeightofsuccess

Jordan's Song headed toward the outside rail at the break. Inspeightofsuccess (Speightstown) broke well and secured a spot in fourth, behind pacesetter Janou. Also part of the speed early were Foreseen Pleasure and Best Put. Inspeightofsuccess started moving up four wide on the turn. It looked like she would roll on by the leader, but as they straightened out, Janou was still in front. Inspeightofsuccess flattened out after that. Meanwhile, Dobra was closing with a flourish, but she couldn't quite catch Janou who stayed on for the win. Inspeightofsuccess settled for third.
