A Frosty Day for the Masqued Queen

Kelode (Saarland) was scratched from his race at Laurel. That one ended up being a three horse race in the slop. The longest shot on the board (at 3-1), The Red Hammer, came from off the pace for the win.

She Steps Lightly Over Bear's Marie

Sparkling Micayla took the early lead, pursued first by Shekina West, and then by Wila Mica who came up the rail. Bear's Marie (Congaree) came out well and sat in third on the outside. Bear's Marie moved up on the turn and took the lead, but couldn't hold off the closing kick of Step Lightly. However, Bear's Marie was well clear of the rest of the field. Grindstone's Babe reared at the start, unseating her rider, and was declared a nonstarter. She received the seldom seen chart call of "unfair start."

Loch Dubhs Shoe Strap

Paid Preview (Speightstown) failed to draw in off of the AE list. Shoe Strap (Birdstone) broke well and went right to the lead. He had company, however, in the form of Tempting Storm. Birdstone shook free from Tempting Storm, but he was unable to hold off the fast-closing Loch Dubh, who had been sitting just off the pace. Loch Dubh was much the best, pulling away by more than 7, but Shoe Strap was well clear of the rest of them. It was a nice return to the races for Shoe Strap and he should move forward off of this one. Loch Dubh is the 12th winner for Friends Lake.

South Forth Lodges a Victory over Class Flirt

All of the AE horses, including Desert Fox (Saarland), and the MTO horse stayed on the sidelines for this one. Flatwood Hank was restless in the gate, but came out running to hold the early lead. That lead was short-lived, however, as a headstrong Sadler Power took over. He sprinted to a clear lead, but used up his energy in the process and began to move backwards through the pack. Favorite Prospective Love took the lead at the top of the stretch, but he had no answer for closers South Fork Lodge and Relvado. South Fork Lodge was going best and took the win. Class Flirt (Pleasantly Perfect) was near the back for the first part of the race, made a big move wide in the stretch, but flattened out late finishing 5th. Neil Howard generally does not win with first-timers and I would expect this one to move forward off this effort.

How about some props for Eyes on Versailles, winner of a 2yo MSW in the slop at Laurel 11/14?  True, a 3 horse field, but won by 18 without being touched, or even asked, in the best time on the card, trouncing a 2-5 chalk in the process?
