Passum Pattie Prevails

Tranquil Times (Peace Rules) was scratched from the Old Hickory Stakes. The winner of that one was Foreign Production. He dueled with favorite Forty Thieves early and then took command. Bertsgoldenmissile was 2nd and Screen Your Friend closed for third.

Bosco Rules (Peace Rules) was scratched at Hawthorne and Caffe D'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) and Footcandles (Speightstown) failed to draw into their respective races at Aqueduct. Smart Attire (Smarty Jones) was also scratched from the 10th at Churchill Downs, but Alma d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) and Mission Gap (Speightstown) ran in that one, so there is a recap below.

Passum Pattie Prevails

Passum Pattie (Peace Rules) went right to the lead, but she was accompanied by Sneaky Patrol. Slowly, but surely, Passum Pattie pulled away from that one to win by more than 3, and increase her earnings to $34,200. Passum Pattie is now undefeated at 4.5 furlongs.

C Gets Her Karma Back

Tiffany Royal and Catarina Ranch dueled early, with Kays and Jays sticking close. A Day for Dancing came rolling four wide, but another was closing faster, C Karma. She came with a rush to score her first dirt triumph. Hug It Out (Medaglia d'Oro) put in a move as well, but she got stuck in traffic and settled for fourth.

Stone Skips Over Second Glance

Second Glance (Smarty Jones) broke well and went right to the lead. However, she couldn't clear Unflappable Miss who had the rail in 2nd. Second Glance finally shook clear of Unflappable Miss, but favorite Skipstone was making her move. Second Glance had no answer for that one, as Skipstone pulled clear by more than three. This was by far Second Glance's best effort. Yes, she did weaken late, but she held on to second rather than going backwards through the field as she has done previously.

Solomon Sings a Victory Tune over Chattertown

This was one of those wow performances. Tough Holiday stumbled at the break and lost her rider. Chattertown (Speightstown) took the early lead, but favorite Song of Solomon was not far behind. She began to draw even on the turn and then took over. She continued to pull away without a lot of urging, putting the field farther and farther behind. The final margin was more than 13. Chattertown was the best of the rest. This is the kind of race that makes me glad that I'm doing Maiden Watch. If it weren't for Chattertown running at Philadelphia, I would have missed Song of Solomon's impressive performance.

Well Positioned in Front

Paydirt took the early lead, but was soon collared by Well Positioned. That one was left alone on the lead and allowed to set easy fractions. He continued to expand his lead throughout the stretch without feeling much pressure from the rider. It was a long way back to Miro in 2nd. The official margin was 14 1/4 lengths. Look who owns the winner, Paul Pompa, Jr. Do you think IEAH may come calling? Mario d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) broke slow, moved up a little between horses, but then dropped back to the tail, inspiring the chart note, "never in the hunt."

Sangre Frio's Clear of Alma and Mission Gap

Sharpsburg went for the early lead, but he was pressed by Oceanage who soon hit the front. Favorite Captain Cherokee (the half-brother to Midnight Lute) broke last and was back in the pack. Alma d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) was at the back on the leading pack early, while Mission Gap (Speightstown) was with the trailers. Sangre Frio made a bid 5 wide, and hit the front as they entered the stretch. Captain Cherokee finally got in gear and was flying at the end, but there was too much for him to do. He did beat out Oceanage for the place spot. Expect this one to be an even shorter price next time out. Mission Gap also made a bid, but flattened out to finish 8th. Alma d'Oro closed a little ground to pick up fourth. As reported above, Smart Attire (Smarty Jones) was scratched.

A Union Strike at the Fair Grounds

First-time gelding Hector Connector caused all kinds of havoc in this one. He ran off during the loading process, but not far enough to be scratched, causing delays. Then, he reared again while they tried to load him. He did seem to stand quietly once they did get him loaded which was good since they loaded him first. He did seem to want to do some running when the gates opened, as he went right up with the pacesetter Southern Region. He soon tired, however, and the pressing role was taken by favorite Powerchord. Southern Region continued to lead, expanding his margin in the stretch, as Powerchord weakened.Union Strike was sitting just off the pace, had to steady a bid, but made continued progress to catch Southern Region and get up for the win. Southern Region did jump the gate tracks late, but it probably was not enough to cost victory. Also closing well were Cat Springs and Trait. Desert Fox (Saarland) made a nice move in here, getting up to third at one point, but flattened out to 7th. It was a much improved effort compared to his Polytrack starts and I hope he gets a chance to run back on the turf. Union Strike's victory was Trainer Steve Asmussen's 555th win for the year, tying his record for most North American training wins in a season.

Miracle Baby (Smarty Jones - Heritage of Gold by Gold Legend) debuts in this race that everyone wants to be in. There are 10 horses in the main body of the race and 6 on the AE list. One of those on the AE list is Gold d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Gold Canyon by Mr. Prospector), who is a veteran of 2 races. It is doubtful that she will draw in, and she has been in a similarly conditioned race on Wednesday.

Miracle Baby has been working in New York since early August. She is out of grade I winner Heritage of Gold, who earned $2,381,762 in her career. Heritage of Gold won or placed in 12 graded stakes, including a win in the Diana (gr. IIT) on the turf. Heritage of Gold has produced Special Heritage, who was stakes-placed on the turf. Smarty Jones' 27 runners have made 52 total starts, recording 8 wins, 8 seconds, 3 thirds, and $484,382.

Gold d'Oro has run twice at 7 furlongs on the Belmont turf, finishing 4th on September 25, and 6th on October 19. She has worked twice since her last start. Gold d'Oro is a half-sister to Adriano, winner of the Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) and the Kent Stakes (gr. IIIT). Adriano also broke his maiden on the turf at 2. Gold Canyon, the dam of Gold d'Oro and Adriano, was a winner and finished 4th in her only turf effort. Medaglia d'Oro has sired 49 runners who have made 141 total starts, recording 23 wins, 21 seconds, 15 thirds, and $1,123,435.

Sally's Song (Unbridled's Song - Exit Now by Wild Again) faced Gold d'Oro on September 25 on the Belmont turf, finishing 7th. A $350,000 yearling, Sally's Song is the first foal out of a mare who is a half-sister to 3 winners, including stakes winner Regal Miss Copelan, and grade II stakes winner Regally Appealing. Regally Appealing won the Adirondack (gr. II) as a 2-year old and finished 3rd in the Schuylerville (gr. II) that same year. Overall, Regally Appealing earned $296,925. Regal Miss Copelan is the dam of Song of Solomon, impressive winner at Philadelphia Park on November 22.

Americas Dreaming (Statue of Liberty - Barnabas (ITY) by Slip Anchor (GB)) has run twice on the turf. She finished 2nd in the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. in Ireland. Then, on August 31 at Saratoga, she finished 9th in a 5.5 furlong turf. Americas Dreaming is a half-sister to 2 turf winners, including stakes-placed Mighty Empire.

The only other experienced filly in the main body of the race is Grace's Valentine (Rahy - Plenty of Grace by Roberto), who finished 7th in a 1 1/16 mile turf race at Saratoga on August 27. Plenty of Grace, dam of Grace's Valentine, won or placed in 9 graded stakes on the turf and earned $744,499. She has produced 4 winners, 2 of which won on the turf and another which placed on the turf.

How would you rate on a scale on the job done by Pleasantly Perfect and Smarty on their freshmen year?? I am no expert by any means but obviously I know PP's foals should get better by distance. Perhaps the Smarty's aren't coming along as quickly as expected but think he'll be ok. From what you post it seems like Medaglio D'oro and Congaree and Peace Rules have so many more runners than the 2 I mentioned, am I correct in that asessment?

i was wondering where the colt blesk(Birdstone-Bigtimeaffair) is racing? i saw on stallionregister that he finished second in a stakes race, but i don't know where the race was held

Frank J - I'm no expert either, but it is definitely true that Smarty Jones and Pleasantly Perfect do not have as many runners as the others you have mentioned - Smarty Jones has had 28, Pleasantly Perfect 18. On the other hand, Medaglia d'Oro has had 49, and Peace Rules and Congaree have both had 41. So, it's better to look at percentages rather than raw numbers of winners.

Regarding Pleasantly Perfect, I don't think you breed to him to get a 2-year old winner, you are looking for a classic winner. So, 2-year old winners are a bonus. But, we have already seen that Pleasantly Perfects do well on the turf.

Regarding Smarty, people forget that he didn't break his maiden until November. So, the best is yet to come. He's certainly had some flashy winners like Be Smart and Keefer.

Alisha - Blesk finished 2nd in the Cena Zimniho Favorita Strike Sportu Stakes in Prague. It was his first and only start so far. Sorry I didn't preview that one.
