Channingstown (Speightown) broke on top and went right to the lead. Winning Drive was sticking close in second. Channingstown set some fairly hot opening fractions (:22.23, :45.36) and his jockey began asking him in earnest. On the turn, Winning Drive put his head in front. Channingstown tried to stay with him, but he was running a bit green in the stretch, probably due to fatigue. He tired late and ended up 5th. Still, speed and fade is not a bad debut and he should move forward off this effort. Big Champ was along for 2nd, while Stephen's Sport made up nice ground to grab third.

Dashin Idea (Congaree), who was entered at Mountaineer, reared in the gate and got her front leg over the front gate. She was freed after a short delay, but was scratched from the race. The winner in that one was Gateway Lady in a romp. By the way, Footcandles (Speightstown), who was scratched after similar antics on December 6, worked today.
