The Sovereign Awards were announced on December 12, and Mind That Bird (Birdstone) was named Canada's top 2-year old male for 2008. Congratulations to Birdstone and all of his connections. Great to see him get the recognition that he deserves for winning 3 stakes at Woodbine, including the Grey Stakes (Can-III).

Missunitednations Charms the South

River Fancy (Congaree) and Missunitednations (Peace Rules) went after the early lead. River Fancy held the advantage on the rail, as Missunitednations was restrained. Missunitednations moved up on the turn and took the lead. But, favorite Southern Charmer was also moving. She got by a tiring River Fancy and went after Missunitednations. Southern Charmer was making up ground, but Missunitednations was tough and didn't let her by, as she increased her earnings to $70,400. River Fancy was tired, but still hung on for 3rd.

Too High a Place for Wild Conga

Wild Conga (Congaree) came out a little awkwardly, but moved up to challenge heavy favorite Captain Booyah on the lead. Joining them was Higher Place. Those three soon separated from the rest of the field. Captain Booyah ducked in and Higher Place took the lead. At that point, Captain Booyah began to tire. But, Wild Conga stuck with Higher Place. Higher Place got the victory, but Wild Conga was well clear of the rest.

Shanes Gold stumbled out of the gate and lost his rider. Rudy Flyer streaked to the front, followed by Bobby B. Goode. They were 1-2 throughout. It was tight for awhile, but Rudy Flyer pulled away in the stretch to win by more than 8. Bobby B. Goode was well-clear of the rest of the field. Midnight Break (Congaree) broke somewhat slowly, rallied a bit and then ran evenly to finish 5th.

Favoritism in the race will probably go to Laragh (Tapit - Rose of Summer by El Prado (IRE)). Laragh most recently finished 3rd in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 24. Previously, she won the Jessamine Stakes on the Keeneland turf. Her maiden win was on the Woodbine Polytrack on August 9. Laragh has gone to the lead in 4 of her 5 starts.

Another who ran in the Breeders' Cup is Dave's Revenge (The Cliff's Edge - Midnite Deelite by Afternoon Deelites), who was 4th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) on October 24. In her only other start, she was a winner at 37-1 in a maiden contest at Del Mar on August 31. Pamona Ball was 7th in that race.

Maiden Black Magic Mama (Black Mambo - Our Deal Helen by Bates Motel) was 8th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). She then finished 2nd as the favorite in a maiden race at Hollywood on November 9.
