Haynesfield Deserves a Second Glance

Haynesfield is Fleet

Aswaaq took the early lead, followed by Mike From Queens. Haynesfield (Speightstown) was rated off the pace. Aswaaq weakened in stretch, as Mike From Queens took the lead. Haynesfield was beginning to rally. He caught Mike From Queens, but couldn't go by as those 2 went head and head for a time. Finally, Haynesfield put Mike From Queens away and drew off. Jess Not Jesse came late to take 2nd from a tiring Mike From Queens. Our other runner, Pitched Perfectly (Pleasantly Perfect) was in a good position early, but seemed to lack punch down the lane and finished 4th. Haynesfield's victory was not as impressive as his Damon Runyon score, but he did show the ability to relax early on which he will need if he is going to continue on the Derby trail.

A Second Glance Victory

Second Glance (Smarty Jones) went right to the lead, hounded first by Silky Slim and then by Sunset Magic. Second Glance, who runs with her head very low, began to pull away. Second Glance was looking like a winner, but suddenly the feed switched to showing the paddock at Gulfstream. The next shot showed the order of finish, she did indeed hold on. Not only hold on, she was a winner by more than 3.

The Magician is Notonthesamepage

The Spectacular Bid was all about Notonthesamepage, who went to the lead from his rail position and never looked back. The final margin was better than 8. Jazzandthemagician (Birdstone) was in a good position early, but then began going backwards. It did seem as though he picked it up a bit at the end, but it may just have been that he was less tired than the horses next to him. I would love to see Jazzandthemagician try allowance company for his next start. I think he needs a confidence builder.

Gotmymojoworkin Too Much for Jeranimo

Street Car went to the lead, but Gotmymojoworkin was right there with him. Street Car weakened after 6 furlongs, leaving the lead to Gotmymojoworkin. Wall Street Wonder took a run at him, but Gotmymojoworkin was not to be denied. Pauper's Prize moved late to pick up 2nd. Jeranimo (Congaree) was in good position early, made a bit of a run, and snuck in for third. I thought it was a good debut for Jeranimo, who had ever opportunity to quit but instead kept running. I'm still smarting a little from this one, as I had Gotmymojoworkin in the exacta with Jeranimo.

Copper Cascades Over Maestro and Master

This was an interesting race as almost all of the early speed collapsed, leaving it wide open for the closers. The early pacesetters included Ten Is Enough, Bear Always, Prospective Love, and Causeway's Kin. Only Prospective Love held on, finishing a respectable 4th. Tippity Tap made the first move among the closers, hitting the lead in the stretch, but he couldn't hold off the closing kick of a wide-charging Copper Cascade. Discreet Street also came on late for third. Maestro and Master (Smarty Jones) was in a good position early, but then faded to the back. He didn't beat many, but he did beat favorite Ruler's Vision. Ruler's Vision was never involved, and finished in front of only Ten Is Enough, who was eased. Alma d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) did not draw in off the AE list.

Canadian Royalty (Peace Rules) went straight to the lead, but he was hounded from the start. First, Jo Jo's Slim Jim was pressing, but he soon dropped back. Gemswick Park (Speightstown - Queen's Park by Relaunch), who was last seen finishing 2nd to Livin Lovin in the Tempted (gr. III) on November 2 at Aqueduct, will stay in stakes company for the Old Hat Stakes (gr. II). She has been working steadily at Palm Meadows in preparation for this race. Gemswick Park previously finished 3rd in the Frizette (gr. I) on October 4 at Belmont, after breaking her maiden in gate-to-wire fashion by 6 lengths on September 14 at Belmont. I think if she has a chance in this one, she is going to have to learn to rate, as Elusive Heat (Elusive Quality - Xtra Heat by Dixieland Heat) looks to be the speed of the speed. This daughter of champion Xtra Heat rolled in her debut on October 12 at Belmont, where she recorded fractions of :22.19, and :44.95. She has not run since then, but she has also been working at Palm Meadows (including a 4 furlong bullet on December 17).

Undefeated Frolic's Dream (Smoke Glacken - Flashy Frolic by Premiership) has also shown speed in her starts, breaking her maiden on September 21, and then taking the Cassidy Stakes on October 18 and the Joe O'Farrell Juvenile Fillies Stakes on November 8. All her races have been at Calder. She has been working at that track to prepare for this one.

Casanova Move (Langfuhr - Casanova Junction by Pleasant Colony) broke her maiden in her 2nd start, going gate-to-wire to win by 9 on August 10 at Saratoga. Since then, it has been nothing but stakes. She was 4th in the Spinaway (gr. I) at Saratoga on August 31, 7th in the Miss Grillo (gr. IIIT) on the yielding Belmont turf on October 1, and 3rd in the Love Affair Stakes at Aqueduct on November 28. She has been working at Palm Meadows, including a bullet 4 furlong work on December 30.

Honchis'n Ponchis (City Zip - Kelli's Song by Dixieland Band) broke her maiden on October 4 at Keeneland, and then ran 6th in the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs on November 1. Most recently, she was 4th in a 6 furlong allowance race at Churchill on November 29. She is another one who has been prepping at Palm Meadows, including a bullet 4 furlong work on December 14.

Sweet Repent (Repent - Sweetbabe by Formal Dinner) was last seen finishing 2nd (behind Renda) in the Brave Raj Stakes at Calder on September 27. Before that, she had won 2 straight, breaking her maiden on June 28 at Calder and winning an allowance race at that track on July 31. Interestingly, two of the horses defeated in those races, Exe and Oilgonewile, came back to win stakes. Sweet Repent has been working at Calder.

Completing the field is Redreamit (Tapit - Dreamsport by Relaunch), who won her only start, a 6.5 furlong maiden race at Churchill Downs on November 23. She may have an advantage here, because she has already shown the ability to come from off the pace. She has been working at Gulfstream Park.

This one looks to be a jockey's race to me, with so many fillies who like to show early speed. It will be interesting to see who goes with the pace and who tries to hold back.

He was 7th first time on the turf, on November 22 at Fair Grounds. That race was better than it seems, as he made a nice move to get up to third, before flattening out late. Previously, he was 11th and 12th in two Polytrack starts (at Keeneland on October 18, and Arlington on September 21).Desert Fox is out of the mare Sandshell, who was placed on the turf. He then ran 8th on the turf at Churchill Downs on November 1. His most recent start was in the Grand Canyon Handicap on November 29 on the Churchill Downs turf. He finished 12th in that one. Good for Rockland it looks like with each race she is steadily improving.  Is there any word on Keefer I believe he was Smarty's second winner.

I don't believe this race amounts to much if you're looking towards the Triple Crown.  Aswaaq was asked to do far too much in the early stages an his run should be discounted.  He's an Empire Maker horse with a decent bottom end pedigree who should be far more at home over extended distances.

Haynesfield struggled to win this event and any ideas that he's Derby horse should be shelved.  His connections should consider keeping him to one turn races where he could do a fair bit of damage, at the right level.

Tigerlily - Keefer had surgery for a chipped ankle in the summer, but I believe he is back in training. According to Sobhy Sonbol (racing manager for Zayat), he is scheduled to return at the Fair Grounds.
